AW Hainsworth Releases Annual Sustainability Update

Renowned textile mill AW Hainsworth have published their 2021 Sustainability Update, which follows on from the in-depth Sustainability Report that was launched at the beginning of last year. In the exceptional year that was 2020, Hainsworth continued to develop their approach to sustainability, implementing and maintaining activities that focus on their long-term commitment to the environment, employees, and the communities within which they work.

A historic woollen mill and Royal Warrant holder, AW Hainsworth has been an unrivalled market leader for 237 years, weaving iconic cloth at their Yorkshire mill for 8 generations. 2020 proved to be one of the most testing in the company’s history, and like the rest of the manufacturing industry, Hainsworth had to react quickly to the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, adopting a range of control measures to reduce risk to employees, their families and the local community.

Diane Simpson, the Director responsible for Hainsworth’s sustainability strategy said, “As a family owned business, we are mindful of the example we must set for the long-term benefit of the local and global communities we touch. Our approach is based on support, education and ultimately delivering a positive environment for generations to come.”

“We appreciate how vital a reliable supply chain is to or customers. We have worked hard to remain open to ensure that our products remain in stock and available, allowing our customers to maintain their businesses as much as possible during this time of great uncertainty.”

“Although we were not able to implement all of our planned sustainability projects, we are proud that even in the unprecedented year that was 2020, we continued to improve our performance, placing sustainability at the heart of our business and minimising our footprint as much as possible.”

In the newly published report, AW Hainsworth detail the Sustainability projects which they committed to in 2020, including highlights of:

  • COVID-19 safeguarding in the workplace
  • Quarterly donations to WaterAid in connection with customer feedback
  • Investment in Health and Safety
  • Virtual meetings and mill tours
  • NHS PPE provision in the fight against COVID-19
  • The Responsible Wool Standard (RWS)
  • Commitment to Slow Fashion.

2021 will see a return to a wider range of projects driven by the company’s commitment to continuous improvement across all areas of sustainability, both internally and externally.
