The Witches are Coming! Countdown to SADOS performing The Witches of Eastwick, South Holland Centre, Spalding 6-9 June.

A new blog....
The Witches of Eastwick blog is over so I have started another one which is called "Dramatic Licence".  I hope to keep you up to date with the activities of Spalding Amateur Dramatic and Operatic Society but the new name gives me more scope to wander off into other areas too! Hope you enjoy it. Trish

It's all over..............
Well that's it for another year.  We finished our run in style with another great show and a receptive audience. The review from the Peterborough Evening Telegraph was in last night's paper. Great hilarity backstage as they printed a photos of three of our chorus ladies yet named them as the three witches.  Brenda, who had been joking all week with me that she would step in for me at a moment's notice, was named as me, so she was in her element!

After the show the "get out" began, dismantling the stage, clearing the dressing rooms and packing everything away.  All costumes had to be taken home to wash and we will return them in a couple of weeks.  So I have my sexy boots for a little while longer haha!

Many of the cast and crew went for a very late night Chinese meal but I went home with my husband as it was our wedding anniversary and, in any case, I find I start getting a bit tired and emotional at the after-show meal.  Today I'm just about keeping myself together but I'm on the brink of tears! How silly really but, after months of hard work, stress and most of all, fun, it's so sad when it ends and my character has to be put away even though I have adored being her.

So my Witches of Eastwick blog ends here.  I have no idea how many people have read it but it has been very cathartic to write it each day.  As we now plan Calamity Jane for next May I will probably do a blog now and again to keep you informed of what Spalding Amateur Dramatic and Operatic Society are up to. Look out for a SADOS blog in the very near future!

One more show to go.....
Another good crowd last night, great whoops and cheers throughout and at the end.  It's at this stage, with only one more show to go, that everyone is now wishing we were on longer.  We just seem to be getting into the swing of it and it's all over.

It looks like we are going to get good reviews from the Spalding Guardian and the Evening Telegraph but by the time they are printed it's too late for improving our tickets sales which, although okay, will not be enough to cover the expense of putting on the show.  Performing The Witches of Eastwick was always going to be a risk because most people don't know the music and only have vague recollections of the film.  But I think it's important for the society to stretch itself and try these different shows, as much for the good of the cast who have been on a steep learning curve with the harmonies and choreography.  Next year we are going to do Calamity Jane and should have no problem filling the theatre. These bread and butter shows will help to keep us afloat financially, but every so often we need to challenge ourselves.  Yes, we need to make money but, for our members, this is our hobby, it's what we love doing.  So we may need to increase our subscriptions and do more fundraising but it is worth every penny if we can feel as inspired and uplifted as we do this week.

Another Night At Darryl's
Last night's performance went really well; audience bigger than the opening night and both cast and audience seemed to have a whale of a time.  Can't believe we have only two more shows to do, just when we're getting in the swing of it! Pace was better last night, costume changes slicker, no missed cues and singing for everyone was excellent (even though I say it myself: my god we were good!).

Couldn't get to sleep last night. Had the usual coming home and being starving hungry.  I suspect the whole cast is raiding the fridge at 11pm, making toast, too high and excited to go to sleep only to wake up in the morning to crave an extra hour in bed.

Got my mum to the station this morning so she could go back to Newcastle.  She saw the show on two nights and adored it and not just because I was in it! Her view was that it was vibrant, funny and a fantastic production for female singers. Lots of good feedback from last night's audience too: SADOS members thoroughly enjoyed the show and they admitted they had been concerned that it was a challenging show to do....but we pulled it off, and in style!

The day after the night before....
WE DID IT! Our first night performing The Witches of Eastwick and I think it's fair to say it was a great success.  Huge cheers from the audience who didn't really know what to expect from the show but came away pretty impressed.  A reviewer from the Peterborough Evening Telegraph told us at the interval that she thought the show was excellent and was planning to give us a 5 star review; let's hope she didn't knock off any more stars in the second half!

The cast were aware of some hitches: missed cues, forgotten words, Darryl's talc-covered hair in the second half creating a cloud of dust whenever he moved suddenly, an excess of smoke for the finale so that the Witches were in danger of being completely camouflaged................. but the spellbound audience didn't seem to notice

Darryl robbed me of my favourite line!!! When Jane says "A lot of men like to talk feminism just so they can get into your panties", I say "That would be a grand speech Janey if you were actually wearing panties!" but our leading man came straight in with his line so my pithy little retort was lost.

However the scene stealer was Darryl's butler, Fidel.  He doesn't speak throughout the show but his comic brilliance was just superb last night, getting laughs when I thought there weren't any to be had, just by a look or by his staggering gait across the stage.  And when he got out his harmonica when Darryl announces "Lights! Music Fidel!" I nearly corpsed!

My family and friends really loved the show and felt everyone was cast brilliantly.  The chorus sang and danced with energy and all the backstage people did a fantastic job shifting scenery and making sure we had our props to hand.  And the brownies made by Sergi's Deli in Spalding were just yummy!

To anyone out there who might be thinking of coming to see the show, which runs until Saturday, get your tickets from the South Holland Centre Box Office (01775 764777).  You won't be disappointed!
