The Golf Blog

Tiger Woods is tied for the lead (-1) at the U.S. golf clubs sale Open with Jim Furyk and David Toms at the challenging Olympic Club in San Francisco. He swing looks air tight, especially off the tee. No longer do we see wild misses to the right off the tee, as had become a regular occurrence under the days with swing coach Hank Haney, who famously described in his controversial book Tiger’s putative fear in hitting the “Big Miss” off the tee. Now, under new swing coach Sean Foley for several years, we are (finally) beginning to see Tiger’s consistency off the tee, with an arsenal of 3 wood stingers, irons, and, yes, the driver.

The stinger is reminiscent of the days of old with Butch Harmon and is certainly a welcome sight. After 2 rounds of the U.S. Open, Tiger is leading the field in driving accuracy. Yes, you heard that right, Tiger is leading in driving accuracy! When is the last time you heard that? Probably not ever under Hank Haney. Tiger has hit 10 of 14 and 11 of 14 fairways on Thursday and Friday, respectively, for a 75% driving accuracy total–nearly 4 percentage points higher than Graeme McDowell, who is in second. It is fair to say Tiger is leading this U.S. Open because of his driving accuracy.

He leads no other statistic and is fourth in greens in regulation–which hitting from the fairway will help to facilitate. If Tiger had a “Big Miss” once before, he appears to have fixed it–not under Haney’s instruction, but under Foley’s. Haney may have helped Tiger in other ways, but it appears that Tiger’s consistency, strategy, and swing off the tee have improved considerably after the switch to Foley. That combination is exactly what a course as demanding and penalizing as Olympic requires.

Bob Graham Support

Yesterday my friend Steve Fry had a sports shoes sale crack at the legendary Bob Graham Round (BG) in the Lake District. The BG is a circuit of around 72 miles that takes in 42 mountain summits and must be completed within 24 hours to allow the athlete entrance into the Bob Graham Club. I can tell you from first hand experience that it is NOT easy.

The course itself is incredibly sports shoes shop challenging but then added to that is the unpredictable weather and the route finding in addition to the logistical aspect of ensuring you have food and supporters positioned around the lake district to help your passage. Steve decided on a 12 midnight start on Friday night and went in a clockwise direction. The weather gods were certainly smiling and a clear moonlit night was followed by a sunny clear day with little wind and absolutley no rain (almost unheard of for a BG attempt!) I was supporting Steve over the last two legs (4 & 5) which meant picking him up at Wasdale car park and taking him up and over Yewbarrow, Red Pike, Steeple, Pillar, Kirk Fell, Great Gable, Green Gable, Brandreth, Grey Knotts, Dale Head, Hindscarth and finally Robinson before returning to the Moot Hall in Keswick – easy if you say it quick.

When Robin and Tom brought him off Scafell and delivered him to Wasdale he was tired and had lost a lot of time over leg 3 meaning that we had some work to do over 4 & 5 if he were to be succesful. Unfortunately, leg 4 starts with a MASSIVE climb up Yewbarrow and it was clear to both me and Andy (his other 4 / 5 pacer) that Steve was far from at his best….. We lost more time against the schedule up Yewbarrow and again the climb up Red Pike was painfully slow meaning we were now well behind a 24 hour schedule.

Jura Fell Race 2012

I know I shouldn’t complain about the golf shoes sale weather but let me tell you that 30 degree heat is not what you need when you race one of, if not the, toughest fell races in Britain. On Friday myself and car full of Bingley Harriers and a wayward Wharfedaler headed north to compete in the legendary Jura Fell race. Jura is an island off the west coast of Scotland nestled between Islay and the mainland and, like Scaramanga in The Man with the Golden Gun is famous for its three paps. The paps are huge bulges of rock that reach skywards to heights of almost 800 meters and as they all rise from very nearly sea level they are certainly an impressive sight.

The race itself is ‘just’ 16 miles long but with 7500 ft of climb and the last 3 miles being along a flat road it certainly packs a mighty punch. I felt reasonably fit over the first three checkpoints and was holding what I thought was a good position but when it came to the 600 meter climb up pap 1 I immediately began to feel the heat and started to slow. By pap 3 I was pretty much dead on my feet and had to dig very very deep to find the last dregs of energy to pull me up the last climb and back down to the road. By the time I reached 3 Arch Bridge which marks the start of the 3 mile ‘sprint’ for home I was burnt to a crisp and totally spent and could only manage a pathetic run / walk back to the finish. I’ve not been as glad to see the end of a race for a long time as I was on Saturday but a good drink, a dip in the sea and some fish and chips soon brought me round.

Sunday dawned hot and sunny once again and as our ferry wasn’t leaving until 7am the next morning, Dave and myself did what any self respecting ultra runners would do and headed out for another lap of the infamous course. This time we took it nice and steady and soaked up the views and checked out the best lines as we trotted round and topped up our tans.

crapThere's nothing like 2 weeks abercrombie fitch sale in the Middle East to put the shine back on the Big Apple. The sun and heat restores all the lost vitamin D that a winter in the northeast annihilates. Luxury shopping malls with yellow matte finished Maserati and Silver Ghost Rolls Royce sitting in unfussy displays for all to touch, sit inside and order (yes order) along with teeming boutiques like Hermes, Dior, Bottega, Armani, Dolce and Gabbana, Valentino, you name it, were all full gleeful shoppers. Yes, I know, Qatar has the highest per capita income of any country in the world and shopping there is the national pastime besides pumping gas and counting money, but still...

Luxury is alive and well there and it put a smile on my face as one who hitched my wagon to that endangered species so long ago. Weddings are the social occasion of ed hardy sale any given week. The royal family, the Al-Thani, is vast numbering more than 2500. With numbers so large in that family alone, there are a lot of weddings going on. From what I've been told, the sexes are separate for wedding celebrations. The men congregate under elaborate tents giving toasts and shooting off guns well into the night. Not exactly my idea of a good time, but hey, who am I? The women in contrast have their party for other women only, pulling out all the stops with fashion and jewels.

There's nothing in the west that can compete with this level of display including popular get togethers like the red carpet at the Oscars or Golden Globes. The invited guests are in their finest which goes from haute couture to, well, haute couture. The black veils and floor length black abayas that cover them in public are all left at the coat check. Is it just me or is there a deathly silence ed hardy shop enveloping the world of style? I'm looking and listening and all I'm getting is white noise. White noise from a bunch of noisy (white) people. When I was a kid we had a cleaning lady who was supposed to come once a week. Often she would appear at odd hours with 3 of her many kids and let them amuse themselves any way they pleased. They'd rifle through the drawers in our bedrooms, tug clothes off of hangers and play dress up, but mostly they liked to go through the refrigerator taking out food and eating it or more often than not hide it in unlikely places throughout the house. I remember coming across sticks of butter melted and rancid on the floor behind the stereo cabinet. Making Hay in the Rain

The feeling of Hay Book Festival on a wholesale nfl jerseys sunny day is hugely exuberant. Colourful flags ruffle and flutter, the book shops are crammed and the stretch of pavement between the town and the festival site flows with a never-ending current of people. Over at the ‘How the Light Gets In’ festival, one can buy the best chai in Hay and listen to any number of philosophical debates and talks. For ten days, the whole town is soaked with thoughts and ideas. I must mention however that for me, the scene described above was exclusive to the second Saturday.

The previous two days threw down wholesale mlb jerseys abysmal weather. I spent much of the Friday stomping across muddy walkways with a heavy bag, defending myself from car splashes with a half-broken umbrella as I wished for sun. My task during the time I spent there was to take street style photos for Oxfam (the results of which can be seen in Part 1 here and Part 2 here), which was made trickier by the fact that storms and fabulous outfits don’t mix well – as one guy quipped, the overall ‘look’ of Hay was “mud”. However, with a keen eye and a fair amount of lingering in book shops, I managed to snap some wonderful individuals. From an Oxfam volunteer who claimed she was 'just wearing her winter woolens' to a delightful pair of sisters whose outfits subtly reflected each other, the attendees of the festival proved that sideways rain and wind couldn’t quell the desire to dress up.

With the clouds tucked away on the last Saturday, the anoraks came off and the groups of book-readers emerged. These people were united by passions - for literature, for history, for philosophy, for art, for languages, for technology, for music – with the festival serving up a menu to suit all tastes. In the course of my three days there, I saw lectures, listened to debates, laughed throughout comic Dylan Moran’s set, and brought home several books signed by their creators. I was inspired, startled and challenged by the range of events. Here are some of the best.

Jeans in Summertime

I used to think that jeans were totally levis jeans sale inappropriate in summertime. I mean, who wants to wear a heavy fabric such as denim during a hot, humid summer? But these days, there are so many summer-friendly denim options out there. First of all, denim fabrics have changed over the past decade. We now enjoy jeans that are thinner, and have stretch in them, making them so much more comfortable.

In addition, one can opt for white jeans – a decidedly summery look, or for jean capris. Of course, denim shorts are always an option, at least for those of us who wee blessed with nice legs! So I do wear jeans in the summer. Maybe not on the hottest days, but for the most part, I find that a pair of lightweight jeans, worn with sandals and a cap sleeve top, or a tank top, feels great and looks great.

Grateful for Jeans Sometimes, as I wear my jeans and T-shirt during the day, then quickly change to heels and a glamorous top at night but leave my jeans on, I think to myself, what would I do without jeans? And then I just feel so grateful that jeans were invented, that they have become a fashion staple, and that they are completely mainstream now, meaning you can truly wear jeans whenever, wherever – except for the most upscale occasions. So, while I wouldn’t wear jeans to a wedding (even a casual one) or to a job interview (even tailored jeans), I pretty much wear jeans to all other occasions. They go with everything, they are durable and flattering and they wash well. Think about it. How lucky we are!

When I think of minimalistic designs, cheap hermes bags I immediately think of Jil Sander. She truly is the master! For her, minimalistic does not have to equal boring. She will often use ultra bright colors to add some interest to her otherwise simple pieces. That is what I like about her designs! So what happens when she produces a piece that is just plain… well, plain? You get this clutch you see pictured here.

What do you see when you look at this clutch? The square bottom and fold-over top sort of reminds me of a lunch bag. You know, the brown paper ones that the “cool” kids would use (as opposed to a plastic lunch box). Oddly, I find this clutch to be somewhat cute. I am not sure why though. Perhaps it is just the simple idea that it folds over the way it does. I do like how the bottom is square and flat. All the contents would fall nicely on the bottom rather than being stacked on top of one another. I can just imagine being able to open the top up really wide and seeing everything that is in there. You can’t say that about a lot of clutch styles. My only regret with this style is that I have yet to see it in a bright color. Hot pink would be nice!

RED Valentino Perforated Hobo

I always tend to have a soft spot for polka discount christian louboutin shoes dots. I’m not sure why because polka dots seem kind of childish or clown-like to me. With that said, I’m sure it comes as no surprise that I would love the RED Valentino Perforated Hobo. I’ve never seen black polka dots featured on black leather before and I’m digging it! It’s different and looks amazing on this bag!

What I love most about this bag is that it’s slouchy. These type of bags are perfect for people, like me, that pretty much throw whatever they can find in their room. I kid you not, I put tons of makeup, wallets, hats, magazines, water bottles, snacks and even flats in my bags. So the bigger the bag, the better for me! Oh, and the zip side pockets are a huge plus!

You can put hidden treasures that get lost easily in them, like lip gloss, a compact or your keys! This is the type of bag I would use all day long especially on those days when I’m extremely lazy and don’t want to put effort into looking stylish. This bag is fun and has its own sense of style. It’s casual enough for a daytime look but it’s also spunky enough for an evening look. I really like this bag but the question is, what do you think of it?

What’s in my bag?

1. JCrew leopard scarf. At a recent JCrew sale I eluxury louis vuitton bags picked up this scarf and a hot pink one for about $20 each. Great for the summer when I spend most of my time on a freezing subway car or cold office.
2. Baggu reusable tote from the No. 6 + BAGGU collection
3. NARS lipgloss in Orgasm. Simply the best, especially for the summer.
4. NARS The Multiple in Riviera. I couple never really get into The Multiple since it I pretty much just use it for cheeks, but hoping if I carry it with me I will start using it.
5. Silver reflective aviator sunglass. Perfect for summer. Purchased at a Brooklyn post office (say what?) two summers ago for about $10.
6. Coach wallet. Gift from about 10 years ago. Still looks brand new.
7. NEW Cole Haan leather wristlet to hold subway pass and earbuds. Nice light gold with a shimmer. TJMaxx $24.99
8. Laura Mercier pressed powder for cover up. Really need to get a new on the go cover up system since this one is too matte, but determined to use this one up first.
9. Glasses. Yes I had LASIK 5 years ago (LOVE) but sadly due to age I now need computer/TV/reading glasses. But these are fun nerdy retro glasses and deserve their own post.
10. Granola bar. When I get hungry I get cranky.
11. Baggu pouch for nail clippers, comb, toothpaste, etc.
12. Kindle. Love to download The New Yorker every Monday morning.
13. Chapstick and Dior gloss (free with Sephora points)
14. Zip up Coach Wallet. Another gift, I use this one to organize coupons, store cards and checks I need to cash. And the Bag: Stripped JCrew tote from about 3 summers ago. The perfect canvas tote.

Longines Watches And The French Open

A couple of weekends ago, I had the privilege swiss watch replicas sale of attending the 2012 French Open (aka Rolland Garros) in Paris, France. The French Open is arguably one of the top two or three professional tennis tournaments in the world (behind Wimbledon and alongside the US Open) and brings the game's top players to the heart of Paris for a yearly event which dates as far back as 1891.

Compagnie des Montres Longines best swiss watch replicas Francillon SA, better and more simply known as Longines Watches, have been the official timekeeper and partner of the French Open since 2007, and claims to have found a strong synergy between their brand and the world of tennis. When you consider Longines' products, their ambassadors, and their partnerships, it becomes very clear as to why the French Open is an ideal venue for what is the largest yearly event in Longines' social calendar as they dedicate a lot of their resources to embracing the sport of tennis.

Longines is part of the Swatch Group which makes them a sibling to a series of other Swiss brands like Omega, Hamilton and even Blancplain. Longines produces both quartz and mechanical watches and are best known for the Lindbergh series and more recently, the Column Wheel Chronograph. Their strength lies in more dressy designs that are practical enough for everyday use while still offering a wide range of complications. According to their CEO the best selling Longines pieces are three hand automatic and chronograph models.

News from Pen-Land

I've never been shy about my love affair with mont blanc pen sale Pilot, but crikey, this pen is the new official Nirvana of pens for me. It has the same wonderful feel of the G2, only slightly lighter, but the thing that really makes it awesome is the needle point. It writes with all the beauty of the G2, but with a needle point. I haven't made a big trip to a pen-store in a while, so I'm not sure how long this has been out, but I snagged mine at Kinko's the other evening on a late-night print run. These pens have snagged my new top-spot from Muji. My new favorite paper/pen-related site is the DIY Planner. They have all kinds of templates of planners/notebooks/etc.

Hubby has built an entire planner from the templates. I'm a big fan. Me, I just made a trip to target and found the new line of build-your-own planners in fun colors. I had to snag some of the filler notebook paper, flags and post-its, and monthly tabs. Ok, so it's been a while since I've blogged about pens, I know. I'm getting back into pen-gear, though. Here's what's been going on: 1) Have you checked out the Piccadilly notebooks at Borders? I'm a huge fan of the Moleskine ones, but the price is hefty. So I was in heaven when I saw these in the discount section of my local Borders. For half the price of the Moleskine, I thought it was worth a shot. And it was! This blog features an excellent review and comparison of the two notebooks. So, has anyone else tried it yet? What do you think? 2) I was in England a few weeks ago and stocked up on some fabulous Muji pens.

They have these great new gel pens that are cap-less. So you can get the satisfying clicky sensation. I bought several, but the bad news is that my cats went crazy and decided to attack the bag that the muji pens were stored in, thus putting them in the middle of a kitty battle that they couldn't win. They still write just fine - a testament to their durability - but the teeth marks around the sides are kind of distracting..
