Australia's only remaining manufacturer of sport shoes, Christian louboutin
shoes, will end production and import all its footwear range from
South-East Asia.
The closure of the Christian louboutin factory at Ferntree Gully in
Melbourne - with the loss of 120 jobs - is the first major closure since the
Federal Government's tough decision in its industry policy statement to
drastically reduce tariffs
Christian louboutin
shoes's manager for human resources, Mr Robert Davey, said yesterday the
factory in outer Melbourne was no longer running efficiently enough to continue,
despite the introduction of robotic technology a year ago.
He said the company had made a decision to close shortly before the industry
statement on March 12, but the announced tariff cuts confirmed for management
executives that the correct decision had been taken.
Mr Davey said that costs - affected by labour costs and an inability to mount
enormous production runs compared with those overseas - made Christian louboutin
no longer viable. But its clothing operations at Dandenong would continue.
Under a redundancy deal agreed with the Amalgamated Textiles and Footwear
Union, 10 employees have already left the Ferntree Gully factory and the rest
will follow after production of Christian louboutin
's "Rome" line is discontinued soon.
Christian louboutin shoes already imports about 50 per cent of its
shoe range and will now acquire its total supply from China, Korea,
Taiwan, Malaysia, Indonesia and Thailand.
The Ferntree Gully plant in Victoria has produced up to 700,000 units a year
of less-sophisticated football boots, joggers and basketball shoes in the
cheaper price range from $80 to $150 a pair, which will now be imported.
The Christian louboutin
boots shutdown has implications for the ability of clothing, textiles
and footwear businesses to remain afloat as tariff cuts take effect.

Shoe designer Manolo Blahnik
There were about 75 manolo
blahnik shoes in the spring/summer 2003's range, each in five
colours. The Devora - which sold best in flash-trash orange and green - floats
you 10.5cm off the ground. A steel pin runs through the hexagonal heel,
otherwise the shoe is entirely kid leather. Your heel is cupped in a
finely sewn semi-circle of petals, through the tips of which run the
asymmetrical crossover straps - which you tie into a bow.
The cleverness and lightness of the construction is, say addicts, what makes
Manolos special - and maybe even worth it. 'They're the high heels you
can walk and run in,' says Jane Procter, broadcaster and former editor of Tatler
. 'The proportions are very, very clever. Some heels render you useless - like
binding your feet. You can put on Manolos and still operate.'
In all, the store carries about 25 footwear and six handbag brands. A rubber
flip-flop by Polo is its least expensive item ($20), while a Manolo Blahnik crocodile sandal
for $995 is currently the highest-priced.
BloomingBirds is one of three boutiques in Aspen dedicated to footwear Aspen
Comfort manolo Shoes and
Kenneth Cole are the others. In Patterson's opinion, her store really doesn't
have any competition. About five independent apparel boutiques feature a
smattering of high-end women's shoes, but offer none of the brands sold
at her store. "It's funny, we're really in a good place right now," she said.

His name is known for glamorous shoes but Manolo Blahnik has now put his
talents to use for Britain's best-known gardening event.
The footwear king's illustration of a daylily will be used to publicise the
2008 RHS Chelsea Flower Show.
His image of a bold flower with deep burgundy petals will appear on posters
for the Royal Horticultural Society's annual event.
The daylily, also known as Hemerocallis Grace & Favour, represents a
traditional English garden and blooms in May when the flower show is held.
Manolo Blahnik was born
in the Canary Islands to a Spanish mother and Czech father.
He opened a shop in London's Chelsea in 1973 and now has a global following.
Blahnik said: ``I grew up
in a house surrounded by gardens. They have always been an important part of my
life and my work so when the Royal Horticultural Society invited me to design
the poster for the next Chelsea Flower Show, it was an offer I couldn't
refuse.''

Givenchy, ysl shoes
Maybe it was nerd stubbornness or maybe it was the fact that my mother would not
allow it, but I never wore black. During the '70s, at least in Los Angeles,
black was an unusual choice -- the brightness of the light clashed with the dark
heaviness of, say, a black velvet party dress. While black did signal advanced
status (or age), it was also, to me, a sign of weakness. It became, in my mind,
the color of capitulation -- if you wore black, you immediately blended in; you
joined the ranks of the mean girl oppressors. Twenty-five years later, this was
proven to me, when, bowing to peer pressure, I departed from my usual palette of
deep colors and wore a black wool sleeveless dress with a black sweater and
Manolo slingbacks to Tom Ford's first fashion show for ysl shoes . It could not have been
a more conventional outfit. A woman who had always been dismissive of me, who
was a taller, older version of the girls in my grade school, surveyed my attire
and clucked, ''I see you've finally grown up.''
51 East already houses a range of international brand names such as
Rolex, Tudor, Favre-Leuba, Roger Dubuis, Hysek, Armand Nicolet, Porsche Design
and Michel Perchin in watches and accessories. Chanel, Givenchy, ysl
shoes , Elizabeth Arden and Amouage, represent
their exclusive beauty and fragrances line while Brioni, Versace Collection,
Francesco Smalto, Valentino and Cerruti Jeans make up their dazzling men fashion
collection. In ysl shoes
and leather accessories, Moreschi, Fratelli Rossetti, Clarks, Bally, Bruno
Magli, Noya, and Baldinini make a vibrant appearance.

And when ysl said
"Fashions fade, style is eternal," the designer spoke for a nation that doesn't
blindly follow the fashion carousel - the French.
Receive 70 per cent off selected styles from designer ranges that include

There were lots of women's ysl shoes in sizes 6, 7 and 10,
but the 8.5s were largely picked over. Styles were limited, though. Mostly
wedges and some less-desirable heels. We only saw 2 pair of boots in the whole
store, and they looked pretty slutty. Belts were the stealth deal of the sale,
priced at $50 apiece with a buy-two-get-one-free deal, so 3 YSL belts for $100.

such as Stefano Pilati at ysl
We have much to thank Italian ysl
shoes designer Salvatore Ferragamo for. During the Second World War,
when leather was in short supply, he experimented with cellophane, wood and
cork, creating extraordinary footwear - inventing wedges and helping engineer
the stiletto. The Ferragamo brand celebrates 80 years this autumn and marks the
occasion with a ysl
shoes collection inspired by its impressive archive. On the clothes
front, new designer Cristina Ortiz's first collection offers a mix of purple
velvet trouser suits and floor-sweeping cocktail dresses in shiny silk satin.
Revered fashion house Balenciaga has always balanced the history of the
label with moving ideas and designs forward, but this season designer Nicolas
Ghesquiere has created an exceptional, super-slick and modernist collection
featuring oxblood and a fluid black latex as well as plastics worked into
space-age coats and moulded dresses. Ghesquiere's austere look heralds a new era
of structured minimalism which was also picked up by other futuristic designers,
such as Stefano Pilati at ysl
, Todd Lynn and Alessandro Dell'Acqua.
Revered architect Hadid makes a splash in fashion this year. She's
collaborated with Melissa (www.melissa plasticdreams.com), a Brazilian firm
specialising in plastic ysl
shoes, to make footwear as complex and curvaceous as her buildings. They
bear little resemblance to footwear, but we hear they're the ultimate in
comfort. Hadid has also designed a 'mobile art container' (a pop-up gallery) for
Chanel. The structure houses a touring art show inspired by its classic quilted
bag. You can see it in New York this October and in London next year.
