slonedog topical discussion of the days events both local and national

Bemuse,Befuddle and Confound
Yet again I have been the recipient of more verbal diarreha, albeit in the form of a news letter from our much vaunted MP, the much heralded LibDem Express. What a load of twaddle.Well done Mr. Hancock you certainly are a man ahead of your time, always involved in what appears to be ``flavour of the month politics''.
Lets look at the front page and the strategic defense spending review, of course you choose to harrangue the Tories and a proposed overhaul of how the government spends the taxpayers money because as you claim they are your chief rival for the riding you currently represent at present. In actuality the biggest threat to defense spending in Portsmouth is from the current Labour government as announced by Bob Ainsworth this week in a speech in Parliament.Portsmouth isn't just about defence industries although it is rather obvious that your main concern is representing their interests , for whose gain wonder a great many people you represent. As a nation we need sound governance and fiscal responsibility that could well mean some projects are mothballed for the time being for the good of the many .It certainly makes people wonder if politicians have a vested interest in the profitability of the industries in the area they represent.I spent a great deal of time in Eastern Europe and read many news articles concerning  the dodgy deal involoving the Romanian Government and the purchase of some frigates from BAE.Makes me wonder.
As for the defections that have swelled the ranks of the local council , again a great many voters are left wondering how many pieces of silver were involved in this , possibly the promise of greater personal expenses or a swifter raod to the mayoral seat , who knows what.
One thing is certain, like with all issues, the day of reckoning will come and hopefully that day will bring an audit of council finances and the council dealings from the past years. At that time the voters of Portsmouth South will get a real view of what LibDem governance is all about.
Lastly, many people do respect Mr.Cable for his sound econimc wisdom and would in most likeliehood welcome his judgement on how this LibDem council has managed the finances of this city.Is it perhaps feasable for him to be invited to our fair city to pass his judgement.

Electoral gibberish
Like many of you i am coming home to find a multitude of pre-election literature piled up below the mail slot.Being a bit of a self styled politico i eagerly read these hoping to find that little something in there for me,an average joe kinda guy. I`m not looking for anything extra special or even the promise of free stuff ,just an honest platform that i can get behind and restore some faith in my opinions of our leaders.
Recently i came across one such leaflet ,very nice presentation, glossy and well written with the perfunctory amount of photos included, you know the kind,MP kissing babies and cutting ribbons. This leaflet led me to believe i am indeed lucky because not only is this guy my MP but he is also my local councillor, complete with his own advice centre just around the corner from me.Apparently he is important too having spoken in the big house in London a staggering number of times. He promises to work toward putting more policemen on the streets as well as fighting for free tuition for our beleagured university students ,all standard LibDem policies. Here we are then,a man with his finger on the pulse of the party,a real trooper with the proverbial ``in'' when it comes to party matters.Yet there is something here that struck me as being a tad disingenious ,earlier in the very day i read that leaflet i saw the party leader right there on national television telling me that none of the promises contained within that glossy well presented leaflet were no longer on offer.Seems to me my MP isnt the man i thought he was.In fact i am left wondering that just maybe he is actually just a marginal character in a marginal group of politicians that have the sole purpose of promising undeliverable policies because they know they will never have power.Perhaps the whole ideology of this party is based on the premiss of befuddling and bemusing the electorate so as to win as many seats as possible ,empty promises will fool some folks but not enough to win power.
Furthermore, if we have a LibDEm council why are they not practicing what they preach ,I recently read that Portsmouth is very high on the list for the use of cctv in fighting crime which seems contradictory to the policy of more cops on the streets.Another virtue they are found of espousing is the fight for transparency in politics yet have been found wanting in that regard, especially at the council level having been accused of covering up the truth in several local issues.
Now i may be wrong but isnt it time that we took party politics out of local government and elected the best people for the job,not the party we felt best.Obviously the LibDems do not offer good governance at any level.
