Dubai Never Ceases to Amaze

Dynamic Dubai is one of those places, which seems to change its landscape at the drop of a hat. Every now on then, the rulers of Dubai spring up surprises like Burj Khalifa, Burj Arab, and the Rose Rayhaan to feed Dubai’s opulence. No wonder, flights to Dubai  are jam packed with eager hordes of tourists. The three Palm Islands and ‘the World’ project bear testimony to man’s attempt at playing god and somewhat succeeding. For shopaholics Dubai lives up to its epithet of ‘city of merchants’ with its swanky malls and souks or traditional bazaars dedicated to specific consumer goods. Take your pick out of the gold souk, fish souk, electronics souk, or spice souk. One can recreate the desert way of life by taking a camel safari.

The adrenalin rush of the dune bashing and wadi bashing jeep safaris has to be experienced to be comprehended. Those bored with the desert, can even try out skiing at Ski Dubai, an indoor ski resort. For the beach birds, the balmy waters of the golden Jumeirah beach prove blissful. Dubai also has a lot to offer to the culture and history bug with charmers like Heritage Village, Majlis Ghorfat Um-Al-Sheef, Saeed Al-Maktoum's House, and the splendid Grand Mosque. An abundance of cheap flights to Dubai make this larger than life destination a convenient holidaying spot.

Dubai Seduces Unabashedly

I had heard many gripping tales about ‘The City of Gold’ (Dubai), but nothing prepared me for the overwhelming experience that awaited me there. The sweeping view from the imposing Burj Khalifa, the world’s supposedly tallest building, makes one feel god like. No less dramatic is the dining experience at the suspension restaurant of the cloud kissing Burj Al Arab hotel. The phrase ‘dining among the stars’ comes alive here. This is not all. Imagination stretches to the breaking point at Rose Rayhaan Hotel, which dwarfs the Burj Al Arab.

The three Palm Islands – the biggest manmade islands till date and the monumental ‘The World’ seemed like a mad god’s creation. The colossal ‘Mall of the Emirates’ and numerous exotic souks (bazaars), be it the Gold Souk with dirt cheap gold jewellery, the maddeningly aromatic Spice Souk, Fish Souk, or Electronics Souk, spoil shopaholics for choice. As I tried out the much acclaimed adrenalin pounding wadi bashing and dune bashing jeep safaris, I could not help shouting myself hoarse with excitement.

The elegant sun kissed Jumeirah and Deira beaches proved ideal for beachside revelry, while the Grand Mosque and Jumeirah Mosque emerged as splendid examples of Islamic architecture. Not to be missed is the enchanting Heritage Village with its fabulous reconstruction of the bygone era. Dubai has everything, right from camel safaris over immense tracts of desert to skiing at Ski Dubai, an indoor ski resort. With no dearth of flights to Dubai, the destination definitely merits a visit for it can not be described in words!

Welcome to Dubai Shopping Festival 2010

The City of Merchants is finally ready with its gala Dubai Shopping Festival 2010 to indulge your shopping mania. This shopping extravaganza will last till 28 February, 2010. Sponsored by Dubai Duty Free, the festival beckons shoppers from across the globe with unbelievably low price tags for every conceivable item under the sun and even beyond. Dubai, an already exuberantly alive metropolis, turns into one of the busiest places on the planet. More than 2 million visitors grace this occasion and pump in over US$1 billion in retail spending.

This year round, shelling out Dh300 at the Deira City Centre or Mall of the Emirates might just fetch you a Dh2 million worth luxury sports car, Tuscan villa, or private yacht. Another magnanimous offer is the Lexus Mega Raffle dishing out prizes worth Dh16 million. Every day of the festival is a new window of opportunity for ticket holders who may win a Lexus LS 460 and a cash prize of Dh100,000. Besides, there are weekly prices to the tune of Dh400,000. Flights to Dubai are selling like hot cakes during this time. Who knows, you might just get lucky like so many others? Laser shows, fireworks, fashion shows, film festivals, and international theatre performances further add to the excitement.

Do not miss out on the souks (traditional bazaars dedicated to different items) of the Dubai Creek. Seasoned bargainers can pick up treasures for a steal at these souks. A walk through the Gold souk will reveal that Dubai truly lives up to its name, ‘City of Gold’. The narrow streets are filled with gold jewellery shops. The story duplicates itself at the Electronics Souk, with the difference that gold jewellery gets replaced with electronics items. To treat your sense of smell to aromatic wonders, head to the Spice Souk, or walk down the Fish Souk to watch a tantalising display of high heaps of fresh catch.

Those looking for carpets will be spoilt for choice at the Carpet Oasis. The area is a virtual sea of carpets displaying the cheapest and the costliest varieties from places as diverse as Turkmenistan, Afghanistan, Pakistan, India, Turkey, and Iran. Besides carpets, one may pick traditional handicraft items like swords and curved Arabic daggers, Arabic coffee pots, silver Bedouin jewellery, inlaid walnut and rosewood furniture, cotton floor coverings (dhurries), marble goblets, and prayer beds.

In the unlikely scenario of getting sick with shopping, people can spend some quality family time at the DSF Family Desert Camp. The venue allows one to rough it out in tents and indulge in delightful activities like quad biking and camel and horse riding. Entertainment shows, an exclusive food court and barbecue facilities are sure to turn even the most puritanical individual into a gourmet. Children can have the time of their lives at an inflatable zone and kiddy ride zone.

This is arguably the best time to book your cheap flights to Dubai as you can treat yourself to scores of entertainment options like the Jazz Festival, Gulf Bike Festival 2010, and the 9th Traditional Poetry Forum under the Patronage of H.H. Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohamed bin Rashid Al Maktoum.
