Bexhill remembered
Have lived in Bexhill most of my life,am only 52 but sometimes feel 90!!!I remember Bexhill when I was younger with very fond memories and used to love Saturdays when would go round the town with my Mum in the afternoon.First stop would always be the library,I would head straight for the children's section, excitedly hoping there would be a new Nancy Drew mystery or another Famous Five book in,oh what joy if there was!!!Mum would go upstairs to the adult section,if I went up to meet her I always remember a quiet calm and the rustle of newspapers. It all seemed very grown up.Next stop would be Maynards, the smell of all the sweets and I would always have Maynards wine gums.Didn't they taste better then, nowadays they taste of not much at all and is like chewing rubber.Come to think of it why is food so bland these days, what happened to tasty food that I used to enjoy.Cakes especially,I used to love coffee cakes that tasted of coffee and rum babas, what happened to them?Next on our tour would be look round Longleys at the bottom of Devonshire Road, upstairs was the ladies fashion and the toilets and ground floor was a mixture of allsorts. It was an interesting place to while away an hour or so and at Christmas the displays were lovely. Then we would go down in the lift to the tearoom which always had a lovely smell and seemed so welcoming and had a pot of tea and a cake.Lastly we would visit Sainsburys, which was over the road opposite Longleys in devonshire Road.It was always very cold in there and always had a smell of cold meats, like ham and corned beef. They had long counters and lots of staff and was always busy. After all our purchases we would make our way home and our mood would be all the more lighter for having spent a delightful afternoon in Bexhill.
