Old People's Champion discusses care.
Published by the Eastbourne Herald Date: 12 March 2010.
EAST Sussex County Council's Old People's Champion has met with Eastbourne residents yesterday to discuss the future of adult social care.
Speaking at the Sovereign Harbour Social Club, Councillor Bill Bentley, told the audience about Putting People First (PPF), the national care plan being rolled-out across the country and the specific challenges faced in East Sussex.
He also talked about Telecare – an advanced community alarm service.
The county has the highest population of over-85s in the country, with more than a quarter aged over 65 and these figures are growing rapidly.
Cllr Bentley, the Lead Member for Adult Social Care, explained the challenges that faced the council to ensure more people got the care they needed in an affordable and sensitive way to meet this growing demand.
He listened to audience views on social care and on wider concerns about transport and community facilities in Sovereign Harbour.
He assured residents that they will be given advice and help from the county council and information on other organisations which could support them.
Cllr Bentley, speaking afterwards, said, "This was a great opportunity to speak to people living in Eastbourne and I enjoyed meeting residents in Sovereign Harbour.
I understand people need to hear first-hand from county councillors about what our policies and plans actually mean for them as individuals.
By talking to and consulting our residents it helps us plan for the future and ensure we are in touch with what people think in our community.
Putting People First is a national policy that sets out how the Government wants social care to be provided in the future.
It will start in East Sussex in April 2010.
The aim is to help people to stay healthy and live as independently as possible, while getting the right level of care.
If people need adult social care support from the council they will have choice and control over the support provided and receive high-quality services.
Those who are eligible for care will get personal budgets so they can choose how they want money spent to meet their own needs in a system called self-directed' support.

he braught with him two of his Department Senior Staff who were very helpful in listening to our Club Members' need.
It was amazing that Seamoor Wine Bar where the members meet every week on Wed. at 10am, managed to squeesed again 53 members and was hard to fit in more chairs from outside.
Sovereign Harbour Social Club Committee and its entire membership wish to send our sincere thanks to Cllr Bill Bentley and East Sussex County Council Adult Social Care Staff, for coming down and meet us for the first time in Sovereign Harbour.

Sovereign Harbour Social Club 2nd Birthday
THANK YOU - THANK YOU - THANK YOU to all those who supported our Social Club in Sovereign Harbour.
59 Members attended the Birthday Party at Seamoor Wine Bar, Sovereign Harbour Waterfront where our members meet every Wed. at 10am regardless of the weather -Rain, Sunshine or Snow.
Sovereign Harbour Social Club is well supported every week and we all feel like we are part of one BIG FAMILY.
The only problem we face is that our Social Club is expending so fast with new members coming to live in the Harbour that at time, we can not find a spare seat to fit everyone in.
Our thanks goes to those elected representatives who came to our Party.
Shame on those public figures who ignored our invitation and never bothered to reply even to our public call, let alone to our private invitation by e-mail.
There is always another time, another date, another opportunity.
We welcome all supports from our elected representatives weither they came to our party or not.
DO SHOW US YOU CARE !!!

Sovereign Harbour residents start a community hall fund Published Date: 20 January 2010
MEMBERS of Sovereign Harbour Social Club discussed funding for a community hall at a recent meeting and started a building fund.
The club has been waiting for a community hall for some time and it is hoped that both Eastbourne Borough Council and East Sussex County Council will help fund the facility.
It was also suggested that a building fund be put in place to allow residents of Sovereign Harbour to purchase a little bit of the community hall by buying a brick for £10.
Cllr Margaret Salsbury was invited to speak to social club members at the meeting and she donated the first £10 herself.
Other members were keen to follow in a bid to help the cause.

Sovereign Harbour - A Cry out from the Depth
Today Wed 20th of January - the weather in the Harbour, wet and miserable.
Sovereign Harbour Social Club had an unusual Turn Out of over 45 members gathered at once.
Seamoor Wine Bar where members meet every Wed. at 10am have never seen anything like it before.
Some members could not squeeze a seat and left standing at the bar.
A new couple, I have never seen before, have recently moved into the harbour, asked this question - Is it always like this ??
Well, to tell you the trueth, we have now over 90 subscribed members.
Seamoor Wine Bar can only take about 40 seated customers.
Our Club average weekly attandence is about 35.
When the weather is foul outside and nowhere else to go in the Harbour; Where else to head but the Social Club.
It is wrong, absolutly owful to think, our elected representatives couldn't careless for this Community in Sovereign Harbour.
WE ARE CRYING OUT FROM THE DEPTH - PLEASE, PLEASE OPEN UP CARILLION OFFICES TO BE USED AS SOVEREIGN HARBOUR YOUTH AND COMMUNITY CENTRE.
Thank You.

Sovereign Harbour Issues - are they HOT POTATOS
Just recently, I have invited High Profiled Politicians to Sovereign Harbour Social Club for Older People.
My polite e-mail invitation to come and visit our Club went unanswered.
Most probably ingnored or deleted as unimportant.
Our politicians, by not bothering to pay us visits, even when we, who elected them, made the efforts to invite them to visit our patch - show there true colour.
what chance do we have then, for all of us who live in Sovereign Harbour, to relay direct messages to them.
Are they not supposed to represent all of us ??
Are they not supposed to listen to us ???
then Why shy away from us ??
Does this mean Sovereign Harbour Community is a Hot Potato no one want to handle or be seen nowhere near.
I realy wounder !!!
Wouldn't you ??
It is time, our politicians take the courage and come out of there closets and help this community in Sovereign Harbour.
After all, we pay them to take care of us.
