At the end of 2005, Portsmouth City Council asked us to vacate Castle Field and our storgage facilities in the Castle and since then 5 proposed sites for training have been suggested by the City Council but for a variety of reasons, none hs progressed past the initial stages. Bransbury Park, King George IV Playing Fields, Drayton Park, Fort Cumberland, Easton Road Common plus various other venues have now all been exhausted nd out of town venues are being pursued. It is such a shame that after 100 years plus, another of our historical events, native to the Portsmouth area, is now being forced out of this city because our own council, along with English Heritage, cannot find an area measuring 100m x 30m.
We will nevertheless go on with our search and strive to continue to provide a major sporting challenge to the young men of not only Portsmouth but the surrounding areas. We are at present negotiating with an organisation who are very interested in our set-up, meetings are ongoing- Watch this space!
The above was updated towards the end of 2009, good news at last for PAFG. The organisation who were interested in assisting us, have now given us the green light, it's all systems go for 2010 and the foreseeable future. Our physical training programme, our setting up programme (probably costing us another £10,000) and our yearly programme and aims for the future, will of course be going out shortly, in a newsletter to our associate members.
Guns and limbers will be going over 5ft walls and traversing the 28ft chasm at the MILL RYTHE holiday camp, Hayling Island.
