NFL Betting Recap – Free Football Contests

Taking a look back on the past weekend’s events is a good idea if you are into NFL betting – even when betting on NFL preseason odds. Consider it practice for the real thing.

Most people who enjoy sports betting and particularly, NFL betting, take it easy when wagering on the NFL betting preseason games. Regardless of what you read in the local papers or posting forums and no matter how many sports betting services are on a certain side or total, plans can change. Unpredictability is the nature of the preseason beast.

Reflecting back on the highs and lows of a recent weekend is a sometimes difficult but necessary evil. Marking losses with a bright red marker, a practice that even professional handicappers employ is painful and it stands out. It’s not something they want to make a habit of.

Whether it was a winning or losing week, anyone that got a chance to take in some of the Week 2 action on the NFL Network or one of the national broadcasts was treated to a couple of interesting storylines, plus we get set for contest season with SPORTSBETTING.com’s free football contests (see the details below):

Brett Favre Starts For Vikes:

Ask a single person that lives outside of Dallas or Washington what was the biggest football related event and if they don’t say, “Brett Favre in purple,” they are probably lying.

Favre’s two drives were anti-climactic to say the least, going 1-for-4 and taking a good lick in the process.  And it sparks debate as to whether any player, regardless of his stature or place in the record books, should be on the field in a live game after missing most of training camp.

A sidebar to the whole Favre situation was a solid performance by Tavares Jackson (12-15, 202 yards). Maybe we keep Minnesota on the list of teams with QB competitions a little longer?

Dallas Unveils New Home:

And in Dallas, little Jerry got to show off his new toy, the Cowboys notched an impressive win and everyone in Cowtown went home happy. After looking awful in Week 1, when the NFL lines came out for Week 2 preseason action Dallas was a small home favorite vs. the Tennessee Titans. The Cowboys covered the spread in their first games in the new stadium, sending fans home happy.

It was pretty funny, though, when the punters that had been pelting the new, million-peg light-bright all through practice actually hit it during the game.

Afterwards Jerry Jones said he built that thing to spec and if the league wants to change it they can foot the bill. Wonder which online sportsbook will be the first to offer an Over/Under prop on number of games until the league caves in and pays for the thing to be raised.

Baseball Betting Tips For Yankees-Red Sox Series

It’s the one baseball betting series that garners national media attention and even casual sports fans will give some attention to – a Red Sox vs. Yankees set. Add in the fact it takes place in late August and it turns up the anticipation.

For those interested in the sports betting side, this matchup always attracts the more betting volume than any other series, usually by a significant margin.

SPORTSBETTING.com has all the baseball betting lines up, including this one.

The Red Sox went into Toronto this week for a three game series prior to the hosting the Yankees this weekend. Heading into the Blue Jays series, Boston had lost nine of their last ten road games, but Toronto proved to be the perfect tonic as the Red Sox won the first two games and now look for the sweep in Thursday night’s game.

The Yankees have the night off as they fly in from the West Coast after having taken two out of three from Oakland. If Boston wins Thursday they will be 6 ½ games behind New York in the American East. The Red Sox are tied with the Texas Rangers for the wild card spot and hope to have Tim Wakefield back in the rotation by next week.

Baseball betting Trends and Analysis

The Yankees will start Andy Petite in the first game. Petite is 9-6 with a 4.09 era. In his last start against the Red Sox on August 9th he pitched seven scoreless innings only giving up five hits but ended up with a no decision in the Yankees 5-2 win. He will face RHP Brad Penny who is 7-7 and an era of 5.22. In two career starts against the Yankees, he is 1-0 with a 2.45 ERA over 11 innings. Check out the baseball betting odds at sportsbetting.com.

The Yankees are looking to turn their fortunes around at Fenway, as they are 0-6 in the two previous series this season. Of course this isn’t the same Yankee team that lost the second series back in the beginning of June.

The Yankees are riding the hot bat of Derek Jeter who finished the West Coast trip hitting .550 (22-for-40) over his past 10 games, including five games with at least three hits, as he has boosted his season batting average to .331.

Robinson Canoe is equally as hot as he has a 14-game hitting streak batting .431 (25-for-58) during the stretch.

The Red Sox are currently riding the hot bats of David Ortiz and Jason Bay as both have regained their long-ball touch. Ortiz has homered in four of his last five games and Bay has four dingers in his last six games.

These teams will meet one more time this season at Yankee Stadium at the end of September, so it’s a big home series for the Red Sox if they have any chance of closing the gap.

NFL Betting - The Brett Favre Effect - Online Spor

Yeah, he’s in the twilight of his career and yes, the never-ending circus around “will he or won’t he play” the last few years is tiresome, but Brett Favre just made the Minnesota Vikings a much better football team.

Despite the age and questions about his health, he is a proven QB and if his arm is healthy since off-season surgery, an real improvement over Sage Rosenfels and Tarvaris Jackson.

NFL betting in sports betting community took note once the news of his signing was announced, as money flowed in on the “Over 9.5” for the Vikings “Season Win Total” at online sportsbook.

SPORTSBETTING.com also reported a jump in action on Minnesota to win the NFC North. As it stands, Minnesota is listed at +130 to win their division, the NFC North; they are also listed at +500 to win the NFC championship and +1300 to win this year’s Super Bowl.

With Favre lining up behind center last season, the New York Jets went 9-7 straight up and 7-9 against the spread.

Meanwhile, the Vikings went 10-6 straight up and 6-10 ATS in 2008.

ESPN’s Cris Carter is reporting that Favre will start at QB this Friday when the Vikes host the Kansas City Chiefs in preseason action; Minnesota is a 3.5-point favorite.

Fast-forwarding to Week 1 of the regular season, the Minnesota Vikings will open with a road game against the Cleveland Browns, listed as 3-point favorites with the Total set at 39.5. Money also showed up on the Vikings side in this matchup, pushing the breakdown to 63% of all the action on the visitor.

In the last 20 games when listed as a fave of 4-points or less, the Vikings are quite profitable at 12-8 ATS. They do have a significant “Under” trend going in this situation, as they have posted 2 overs and 9 unders the last 11.

The game that everyone is now eyeing takes place on November 1 when the Vikes will play at Lambeau Field. Big divisional matchup and Favre hitting the field wearing a Viking jersey.

SPORTSBETTING.com lets you bet on this game right now with their “Games of the Year” prop offering. The Green Bay Packers are 2.5-point favorites in Game of the Year betting.

In Minnesota’s last 10 visits to Lambeau they are 7-3 ATS at the same time.

Should Favre return to form and lead the Minnesota Vikings to a successful season, he could be a candidate for NFL MVP and he is listed at +1800 to take this year’s award.

Like a cat, Brett Favre seems to have nine lives in the NFL football betting league, with his latest stint taking him back to the NFC North.

Is he past his prime or will he rekindle the magic?

We’ll see.

NFL Football Betting – Thursday Previews

It isn’t often that two football games can provide five of the biggest QB names in the business. It’s not a controversy that has people talking, either. Just a whole lot of comeback stories bunched together in one night of preseason action!

NFL football betting Odds and Analysis

Bengals at Patriots

For games that aren’t supposed to mean anything, bettors and fans alike were given more than a fair share of things to talk about in the first week of the NFL football betting preseason. Quarterbacks, always the center of attention to begin with, were an even greater focus when Carson Palmer and Tom Brady trotted onto the field to take their first reps since injuries cut last season short.

New England was on the road but you can bet that every football fan in Boston was watching to see if Brady still had his magic touch. Rest easy Pat-fan, he had good mobility, his vision hadn’t skipped a beat and when it was all said and done the former MVP finished 10-for-15 with two touchdowns and one interception.

Palmer was in New Orleans to take on the Saints and although his team lost 17-7 it looked as if his elbow was back to 100-percent. The highlight for backers that suffered through Cinci’s four-win campaign last year was when their star pivot hooked up with Ochocinco for a 55-yard gain. Ocho had his worst production since 2001 last season and with TJ Houshmandzadeh gone, No. 85 needs to get back on track.

The Bengals will look to even its record Thursday when the team visits Foxboro to take on the Pats. New England was originally listed as 4.5-point favorites at online sportsbook SPORTSBETTING.com when the NFL football betting lines were posted, but heavy betting on the home side has boosted that number as high as -8 at some books. SPORTSBETTING.com reported action tipping heavily New England’s way, as they received 85% of all the early action.

The largest pointspread through the first 15 preseason games was only three and-a-half points and although favs did win the majority of the games straight-up, most lines were fairly tight. Against the number favs went 8-6-1 ATS.

- Eagles at Colts
Philadelphia is at Indianapolis in Thursday’s second contest and Colts fans are hoping that when Tony Dungy left town he didn’t take the offensive playbook with him! Indy fell 13-3 last week vs. Minnesota, moving the Colts’ preseason record in its past seven outings to 1-6 SU.

The last time Indy scored three points in a regular season game was in 1997 and as new head coach Jim Caldwell looks to notch that elusive first victory, look for a better effort out of the home side in this contest.

Philly lost its preseason opener on a missed field goal in the final minute but feels it won the war that night by signing Michael Vick to a 1-year deal. The Eagles are one of the highest scoring preseason teams in the league the past while, averaging 24 points per game in their last four outings. Indy has surpassed that figure just once in its past 10 preseason outings and the early total on this game is set at 36.5.

Trend bettors may also note that Philly is 10-0 ATS the past 10 years in its second preseason game of the year – definitely one of the contributing factors behind just the second road fav line of 2009.

The early NFL football betting action at online sportsbooks has been evenly split in this tilt.
