Apple plans to launch TV streaming service by Chri

According to a report from the New York Post, Apple is planning to launch a new television streaming service by Christmas despite roadblocks with potential content partners. The report cited sources “familiar with the talks” between Apple’s Senior Vice President of Internet Software and Services Eddie Cue and content providers that have “largely balked” at Apple’s attempt to “exert control over all aspects” of negotiations:Designer iPhone 4 Cases|Designer iPhone 4S Cases|Designer iPhone 4 Case|Designer iPhone 4S Case

“Apple’s negotiating stance can be summed up as “we decide the price, we decide what content,” according to one source familiar with the talks…They want everything for nothing,” said another media executive, echoing similar tense negotiations Apple has had in the past with magazine publishers and music companies.”

The report said Apple wants content providers to offer their channels through apps accessible on Apple TV as well as other Apple devices. The report’s sources were unsure whether Apple planned to offer several of these apps in cable TV-style packages or as individual apps. Apple also apparently—although unsuccessfully— tried to convince cable companies to ditch their cable boxes for Apple devices in an attempt to “create the interface” and have the cable companies “manage bandwidth across the TV and broadband pipeline.” The New York Post explained:Louis Vuitton iPhone 4 Cases|Louis Vuitton iPhone 4S Cases|Louis Vuitton iPhone 4 Case|Louis Vuitton iPhone 4S Case

More recently, Apple has tried to get cable operators to work with it to improve the accessibility and look of video services and in the process dump their clunky cable boxes in favor of sleek Apple devices… Instead, cable executives pretty much shut the door, preferring to keep Apple at a safe distance from the lucrative $150 billion pay-TV business.

The Post noted similar attempts by Apple to strike deals with content providers for a TV service in 2009, but the efforts failed due to Apple requesting shares of ad revenue opposed to a more traditional licensing deal.

The sources claimed Apple is focused on launching the streaming service before the introduction of the rumored Apple HDTV. They also backed up earlier reports from Jefferies & Co. analyst Peter Misek that Apple may collaborate with Verizon and AT&T to gain access to programming. Apple is expected to launch an updated version of its Apple TV set-top box this month alongside the next-generation iPad.

B82 Poll: What kind of new Apple accessory is it?

In our report earlier this week we found a new Apple accessory part called B82:Louis Vuitton iPhone 4 Case|Louis Vuitton iPhone 4S Case

We’re also hearing of a mystery accessory that will launch alongside the new iPads and Apple TV. We’re not sure what it is, but it’s called “B82? internally. The product is likely some accessory, probably ranging from either a cable, cover, or new audio remote. The new Apple TV will include Bluetooth 4.0 capability, so perhaps Apple will ship an improved remote to that takes advantage of that next-generation Bluetooth protocol.

So what do you think B82 is?Chanel iPhone 4 Cases|Chanel iPhone 4S Cases|Chanel iPhone 4 Case|Chanel iPhone 4S Case

Review: Reflection app brings full iPad & iPhone A

Right before Apple made AirPlay mirroring for Macs official with the Mountain Lion developer preview, we told you about AirParrot, a third-party app that brings the same functionality to Snow Leopard. The same developers just announced the first solid release of another AirPlay app, but this time it is for iPad 2 and iPhone 4S mirroring to your Mac. “Reflection” ($14.99 single license) allows users to easily view their iPhone or iPad’s screen (and audio) on a Mac’s display over AirPlay. We went hands on…Louis Vuitton iPhone 4 Cases|Louis Vuitton iPhone 4S Cases

Reflection is still a work in progress, but it is more than solid enough for everyday use based on our first impressions. After installing the app, simply select your Mac from AirPlay on an iPad 2 or iPhone 4S, and then the device’s screen is instantly displayed in real-time on a Mac while encased in an iPad or iPhone-shaped frame (like the Xcode iOS simulator). In our tests, it hovered around 30 FPS and set at Hi-Res (1929-by-1080). Unlike AirParrot, Reflection also supports full mirroring. That means full audio and orientation support. You can also lock your orientation to landscape or portrait if necessary.

In the video above, we put the app through the paces by playing a YouTube video, running a game with Cut the Rope, and browsing in Safari. These were each tested on an iPad 2. You will experience the odd hiccup, but any lag is bearable throughout the overall experience for the most part.

The only time an app crashed, not surprisingly, was when graphically intensive games like “Dead Space” and “Jetpack Joyride” ran. A reboot of the iPad was necessary to get Reflection back to normal. It will be a hit and miss with games, because some you would expect to run actually crash, while others like Cut the Rope will run perfect most of the time. Other apps run just as smooth as you could ask for. As a test, Netflix ran without issue, and we experienced hardly any lag in Maps.Gucci iPhone 4 cases|Gucci iPhone 4S cases|Gucci iPhone 4 case|Gucci iPhone 4S case

Reflection does not include a ton of options. At this point, the app’s preferences are limited to simply selecting a suitable resolution for your device and the ability to launch as a full-screen app. However, launching in full-screen mode (shown towards the end of the video above) will simply put the frame on a grey background. This allows Reflection to function as a full-screen app in OS X rather than having the iPad’s screen fill the Mac’s entire display. The app’s website also hinted at the ability to record your screen, but that functionality is not currently included.

You can grab a single-user license of Reflection for $14.99 or 5 licenses for $39.99 here. There is also a free limited-time trial available through the website before you make the purchase.

AT&T changes its throttling techniques: 3GB for HS

.

AT&T is now getting ahold of their throttling plans by laying out the numbers which will get users put into the “reduced data scenario”.  Instead of the sliding scale “top 5% of users” which often was people under 2GB, they now have a hard maximum of 3GB for HSPA users like those with iPhones and 5GB for their new LTE offerings.  Users will receive a warning the first time but won’t get a notice thereafter.

Additionally, we’ve heard that the actual throttling is a lot less severe as pointed out by some Howard Forums users.

The move follows outcry from customers and even some customer lawsuit victories.

There is a new site and FAQ for those interested.

AT&T statement follows:Louis Vuitton iPhone 4 Case|Louis Vuitton iPhone 4S Case

With mobile data usage continuing to skyrocket and the availability of spectrum scarce, AT&T, like other wireless companies, manages its network in the most fair way possible so that we can provide the best possible mobile broadband experience for all our customers.

How we’re managing the network only affects a small minority of the heaviest smartphone data users still on unlimited plans. Put another way, this does not impact more than 95 percent of our smartphone customers.

Our unlimited plan customers have told us they want more clarity around how the program works and what they can expect. Here’s what customers need to know:Burberry iPhone 4 Cases|Burberry iPhone 4S Cases|Hermes iPhone 4 Cases|Hermes iPhone 4S Cases

· Customers with a 3G or 4G smartphone – who also still have our unlimited data plan – will see speeds reduced if they use 3GB (gigabytes) of data or more in a billing cycle. Speeds will return to normal at the start of the next billing cycle. For context, less than 5 percent of smartphone customers use more than 3GB per month.
· For customers with a 4G LTE smartphone – who also still have our unlimited data plan – data speeds will be reduced if usage is 5GB (gigabytes) or more in a billing cycle. Speeds will return to normal at the start of the next billing cycle.

Customers will get a text message from us before experiencing a change in speed.

Even with reduced data speeds, these customers will still be able to email and surf the web, and continue to use an unlimited amount of data each month.

Not impacted by this program, launched last year, are customers on our tiered data plans.

The reason reduced speeds only apply to unlimited smartphone customers is because their data usage is significantly higher than those on tiered plans. For example, in January, the top 5 percent of our unlimited data plan customers used an average of over 50 percent more data than the top 5 percent of customers on tiered plans.

Because spectrum is limited and data usage continues to soar, we manage our network this way to be as fair as possible and so we can provide the best possible mobile broadband experience to everyone.

We encourage all of our customers to use Wi-Fi whenever possible – especially when watching video, which is the most data-intensive activity.

That’s because data activity over Wi-Fi does not count against the threshold for unlimited customers that triggers reduced data speeds or against customers’ tiered data plans. Customers can find out more at www.att.com/datainfo

Munster on Apple’s mythical HDTV set: ‘It will be

Pictured above: An Apple television concept render by Guilherme Schasiepen.

Piper Jaffray’s resident Apple analyst Gene Munster stands out as arguably the most outspoken proponent of an Apple-branded HDTV television set otherwise known as the mythical iTV. With all eyes now on Apple’s iPad 3 unveiling next Wednesday, the pundits are also keeping their fingers crossed for a much-needed Apple TV refresh with 1080p video output and a faster processor, especially now that Apple TVs are increasingly disappearing from shelves.

Piggy-backing on the forthcoming product unveiling hype, Munster shed more light on what he believes a full-blown television set adorned by the shiny Apple logo should be like during yesterday’s interview with Bloomberg Radio’s Tom Keene and Ken Pruitt. Munster is betting Apple will introduce the rumored product some time this year and is expecting fall availability. You will want to buy it, because:Louis Vuitton iPhone 4 Case|Louis Vuitton iPhone 4S Case

It’s going to live up to some of the building hype. It will be the biggest thing in consumer electronics since the smartphone.

From a design standpoint, the iTV “will look different” than your regular television: “Imagine just a sheet of glass – no edges or bevels.” The analyst re-iterated his previous observations, including strong focus on content consumption (presumably delivered through iTunes/iCloud) and Siri voice control…Coach iPhone 4 Case|Coach iPhone 4S Case

The analyst also expects the iTV will let you both channel surf the traditional way by using a remote control and navigate by using your voice (“show me sci-fi movies rated 8/10 and released last year”). He speculated this dual-mode navigation is “the code that Steve Jobs said he had cracked in his biography.” Last April, Munster asserted Apple would have to introduce a new video-focused service alongside the iTV—presumably serving scheduled/live TV plus movies and TV shows. The service is said to stem from an alleged array of super data centers that Apple is supposedly keen on building the world over.Hello Kitty iPhone 4S Case|Hello Kitty iPhone 4 Case

Munster is well-known for touching on the subject of an Apple television in his notes to clients. A month ago, he claimed Apple was tapping a “major TV component supplier” and inquiring about “various capabilities of their television display components,” echoing an October 2011 report by the New York Times. The key, as always, is premium content. “Without a revamped TV content solution, we do not think Apple enters the TV market,” Munster opined while sharing a sentiment published in the Wall Street Journal

New iPad parts pictures show the…wait for it…butto

After the iPad 3 event invite didn’t show a button, some were quick to come to the conclusion that there wouldn’t be a button on iPad 3.  We think this is highly unlikely. Among many other reasons, there is one in every leaked iPad 3 part, as shown by these digitizers on Fix-iPhones.com today.Louis Vuitton iPhone 4 Cases|Louis Vuitton iPhone 4S Cases

Also we see both black and white colors represented.  We had originally heard that there might only be one color of the base model iPad 3 but a few hours later, we found the new part numberswhich indicate both colors would be introduced. Another image below:

Apple tops Fortune’s World’s Most Admired Companie

The 12 months of 2011 were an exhilarating ride for Apple of Cupertino, Calif. It went through a major leadership transition after the company lost its cofounder Steve Jobs and op-chief Tim Cooktook the reigns and appointed several new executives. The iPhone 4S became a huge success and pushed Apple’s market capitalization above the half a trillion-dollar valuation.Designer iPhone 4 Case|Designer iPhone 4S Case

Editors at Fortune magazine did not have second thoughts when ranking Apple first on its annual list of World’s Most Admired Companies due to the company’s impending iPad 3 unveiling, off-the-chart sales, and beautiful new retail stores like the upcoming Amsterdam outlet. Seasonal product refreshes and new rumored gizmos (of which an Apple-branded HD TV television set is conceivably everyone’s favorite) helped Apple garner the spot, as well. Mind you, Apple earned this coveted title for five years in a row.

Here’s from the publication’s editors:Coach iPhone 4 Case|Coach iPhone 4S Case

To say it was another big year for Apple would be a gross understatement. With the passing of Steve Jobs, questions swirled around the company’s future. But under new CEO Tim Cook’s guidance, Apple continues to prosper. The company’s annual revenues climbed to $108 billion, led by an 81% increase in iPhone sales — a jump that doesn’t factor in the runaway success of the iPhone 4S — and a 334% spike in iPad sales, due in no small part to the revamped iPad 2. Increased sales across the board explain why shares soared 75% during the company’s fiscal year to $495.

Following Apple’s trail is the second-ranked Internet giant Google (No. 1 in Internet Services and Retailing last year). It is another Silicon Valley darling that went through a transition in 2011 as Eric Schmidt passed the CEO reins to cofounder Larry Page in April. Page co-founded Google with Sergey Brin and quickly re-instituted startup mentality that calls for “moon shots” while streamlining the company’s operations.Louis Vuitton iPhone 4 Case|Louis Vuitton iPhone 4S Case

Google made several acquisitions, spending $12.5 billion for Motorola Mobility and $125 million for Zagat, among others. Consumer-facing services like Gmail, YouTube, and Google Reader saw significant updates, and the company finally unveiled its social network, Google+. Android also continued to dominate. According to Andy Rubin, SVP of mobile, 700,000 Android devices are now activated every day.

Amazon.com (had 17 new fulfillment centers planned and saw 6 million Kindle Fire shipments last holiday season), Coca-Cola (expanded the brand beyond the sugary sparkling beverages and saw moderate growth of Powerade and Gold Peak Tea), and IBM (experienced revenue growth in BRIC on strong sales of business analytics and had cloud services and Smarter Planet solutions) rounded the top five slots on Fortune’s World’s Most Admired Companies list that includes 50 corporations enjoying the best reputation.

Here’s Fortune’s methodology:Hermes iPhone 4 Case|Chanel iPhone 4 Case

The Most Admired list is the definitive report card on corporate reputations. Our survey partners at Hay Group started with approximately 1,400 companies: the Fortune 1,000 (the 1,000 largest U.S. companies ranked by revenue), non-U.S. companies in Fortune’sGlobal 500 database with revenue of $10 billion or more, and the top foreign companies operating in the U.S.

They then sorted the companies by industry and selected the 15 largest for each international industry and the 10 largest for each U.S. industry. A total of 698 companies from 32 countries were surveyed. (Due to an insufficient response rate, the results for 11 companies in the scientific, photographic, and control equipment industry were not published. In addition, due to the distribution of responses, only the aggregate scores and ranks for the 10 companies in the oil and gas equipment/services industry were published.) To create the 58 industry lists, Hay asked executives, directors, and analysts to rate companies in their own industry on nine criteria, from investment value to social responsibility. This year only the best are listed: A company’s score must rank in the top half of its industry survey.

To arrive at the top 50 Most Admired Companies overall, the Hay Group asked 3,855 executives, directors, and securities analysts who had responded to the industry surveys to select the 10 companies they admired most. They chose from a list made up of the companies that ranked in the top 25% in last year’s surveys, plus those that finished in the top 20% of their industry. Anyone could vote for any company in any industry. The difference in the voting rolls is why some results can seem anomalous—for example, although FedEx is one of the top 10 Most Admired Companies, it is second in the Delivery industry behind top-ranked UPS, which ranked 29th on the top 50 overall.
