Judge extends Mississippi abortion law block
JACKSON, Miss. — A federal judge on Wednesday decided to continue to block a state law that threatened to shut down Mississippi’s only abortion clinic. U.S. District Judge Daniel P. Jordan III temporarily blocked the law July 1 and extended that order Wednesday, though he did not immediately say how long it would last.
The U.S. Supreme Court ruled that states can’t place undue burdens or substantial obstacles to
Portugal Euro 2012 Jersey women seeking abortion. The law would require anyone performing clinic abortions to be an obstetrician-gynecologist with privileges to admit patients to a local hospital. The doctors at the Jackson clinic do not have those privileges.
Supporters of the law say it’s designed to protect patients. Republican Gov. Phil Bryant says he hopes it will help make Mississippi “abortion-free.”
The clinic, Jackson Women’s Health Organization, says it has been unable to obtain admitting privileges for two out-of-state doctors because local hospitals have not responded to their requests.
Admitting privileges can be difficult to get because hospitals might not grant them to out-of-state physicians. Hospitals with religious affiliations might not give them to doctors who perform abortions.
The clinic said it would face “irreparable harm” if the law were to be enforced because hospitals haven’t said when — or if — they’ll consider the admitting privileges.“If they’re denied or if the hospitals are dragging their feet, that’s going to be more clear evidence that there’s a substantial obstacle” to access to an abortion, clinic attorney Robert McDuff said. The government said the privileges help protect patients by ensuring they have continuity of care if a woman needs to go to the hospital. They also note that while the clinic might have to wait to get hospital privileges, “inconvenience is not ‘irreparable harm.’”
The state attorney general’s office declined to comment.
The law was passed by the GOP-controlled Legislature. When Republican
Spain 11/12 SILVA Home Jersey Gov. Phil Bryant signed it, he said: “If it closes that clinic, then so be it.”
The state’s attorney had argued that any anti-abortion statements by elected officials were “weak evidence” that the purpose of the law was to prevent abortions.
Terri Herring, of the Pro Life America Network, said the hospitals should deny admitting privileges for the abortion clinic’s doctors.

Romney asks Americans to vacation in Colorado
Republican presidential candidiate Mitt Romney swept into Colorado Springs on Tuesday, recounting stories of inspiration from the destructive Waldo Canyon fire and encouraging the rest of the country to help Colorado by visiting.
"People around the country are wondering what can they do because we've all watched what's happened here with horror as we've seen the flames and the homes lost and the stories of loss of life," Romney said during a stop at the Care and Share Food Bank for Southern Colorado.
"People in the immediate community, of course, can bring in canned goods. But what can people do that are from Boston and New York and Chicago? Well, you can come to Colorado and vacation this summer," he said.
"What's happening is people are staying away because they think the whole area has been

burned out. It's not," he said. "It's beautiful as it's always been and tourists need to come back ... or else the suffering from this fire will be more severe than it needs to be."
Romney, dressed in blue jeans and a dress shirt with the sleeves rolled up, worked with food bank volunteers, sorting such things as macaroni and cheese, cereal bars and crackers.
"There's been a huge outpouring of support in the community to provide food to folks who have been affected by the fires," he said while holding a big box of Fiber One cereal bars. "It's an inspiring thing to see people step up to make a difference."
Romney also met privately with fire victims.
Mountain Shadows resident Tonya Hall, a radio talk show host who lost her home

"It was a very intimate conversation," Hall said. "I think he really did want to make a personal connection with the people that were there."
Hall said there was a lot of discussion about how the community pulled together and how people care about each other. But people also asked questions, including why local governments don't have quicker access to military aircraft to fight fires.
"I hope that he, when he becomes elected, that he remembers that bureaucracy shouldn't come before the No. 1 role of government, which is protecting the citizens," Hall said.
Romney didn't get into specifics but said he would "help do a better job" and "learn from the lessons of the tragedies here" if he is elected.
"But the most important lesson is one we can all be inspired by and that is the willingness of one person to help another person to make a difference in solving the challenges of their life at a time like this," he said.
Romney, who spoke to reporters for about four minutes but didn't take any questions, lauded Care and Share and the community, saying people volunteered in "droves" and donated more than 1 million pounds of food.
"The experience here, heart wrenching as it is for those that have lost

Romney said he heard multiple stories of selflessness, including utility workers who traveled from out of state to help Colorado Springs. He also said he met a young man who raced through flames on his four-wheeler to warn others about the approaching fire.
"We heard stories of first responders, particularly police and fire, that were heroic in their efforts to help people evacuate to protect homes, to protect lives," he said. "This has been a story of inspiration."

HUFFPOST FUNDRACE -- $100 Million For Mitt
Mitt Romney's campaign raised $100 million in June when combined with the Republican National Committee and the campaign's joint fundraising vehicle, known as Romney Victory. If these numbers hold up -- we will finally see Romney Victory's fundraising on July 15 -- Romney and the RNC will be the first candidate and party duo to break $100 million in the 2012 race. Barack Obama and the Democratic National Committee jointly raised more than $100 million in three consecutive months in 2008 and set the record for
Toms joint fundraising in September of that year raising $195 million. The Obama camp hasn't come close to those numbers yet in 2012 with their top joint fundraising total reaching $59 million in May.

The New York Times' Robert Draper has a long piece in this weekend's magazine about the mad dash for super PAC cash by the team behind Priorities USA Action, the pro-Obama super PAC. It's a real must-read to understand the absurd lengths the super PAC must go to to solicit $1 million checks. Also, "As of late June, the super PAC has amassed a total of $40 million, with almost $20 million in the bank and about a dozen million-dollar donors onboard." This would mean that the pro-Obama super PAC would have raised $26 million in June! If so, it would be the biggest haul by any single super PAC in one month since super PACs were conjured into existence.
The Washington Post reports that presidential fundraising is down from 2008, while congressional fundraising is up. The main difference from 2008 to 2012: the lack of a blockbuster three-way primary on the Democratic side.

Luke Ronchi to pursue New Zealand career
Western Australian wicketkeeper Luke Ronchi will pursue a career in New Zealand in a bid to win a place in their national side. Ronchi has told his Western Australia team-mates of his decision and he will finish his commitments with the Warriors this summer before heading to New Zealand next season.Ronchi, 30, played four one-day internationals and three Twenty20s for Australia in 2008 and 2009 when he was second in line to Brad Haddin, but he lost his place in the state side towards the end of 2008-09. He has struggled to hold down his
Real Madrid Jersey Sheffield Shield spot since then, although he has made two Ryobi Cup hundreds this season. In the national setup, Ronchi has been overtaken by Matthew Wade and Tim Paine, and probably others like Peter Nevill, and his chances of further games for Australia were slim. Ronchi will qualify to play for New Zealand having been born there, although his family moved to Perth when he was six years old.Under the ICC's qualification rules, Ronchi will be eligible to play for New Zealand next January, having last played for Australia in January 2009. The ICC condition states: "Where a male player is seeking to qualify to play for a Full Member, he must not have participated in an international match for any other Full Member during the immediately preceding four years."Ronchi may yet be able to play for the Perth Scorchers squad at the Champions League Twenty20 later this year as the tournament will be held before New Zealand's domestic season begins. Ronchi said he knew the move was a risk but he felt it was his best chance to play international cricket again. "I am heading across the Tasman with no guarantees but at 30 years of age I feel that I still have a lot to offer at the very highest level and I am looking forward to making the move with my family," Ronchi said. "I have been around so many outstanding players, coaches and administration staff in my time at the WACA and I can't thank them enough for the support they have provided to me over the past decade."Ronchi has chosen a good time to push his case, with New Zealand having sifted through five wicketkeepers in all formats over the past two years. Gareth Hopkins and Reece Young have both been tried and discarded, while Brendon McCullum no longer takes the gloves in Test cricket.BJ Watling was behind the stumps in New Zealand's
Cheap Soccer Jerseys last Test, while the South African-born gloveman Kruger van Wyk was also in the squad for the Test against Zimbabwe. But Ronchi will need to prove himself in New Zealand's domestic cricket before he will be considered for higher duties, and having not scored a first-class century since 2009-10, his chances might be more likely in limited-overs cricket.A powerful striker, Ronchi scored what was then the fastest century in Australian domestic one-day history in 2006-07 when he reached triple figures in 56 balls against New South Wales. In a first-class game the following summer he struck a 51-ball ton against Queensland, his second fifty coming in a remarkable 11 deliveries, and his 22-ball fifty in St Kitts in 2008 was then the equal third-fastest half-century by an Australian in an ODI.

Sehwag unaware of Dhoni calling seniors slow
Virender Sehwag has said that he was not aware that one of the reasons MS Dhoni wanted to rotate the three openers in the Commonwealth Bank Series was that Dhoni thought playing all three would cost 20 runs in the field. Sehwag captained India, in Dhoni's absence, against Sri Lanka, and he, Gautam Gambhir and Sachin Tendulkar played together for the first time in the tournament. Sehwag said Dhoni had chats with all three individually, saying that youngsters should get enough exposure in these conditions keeping in mind the next World
Soccer Jerseys Cup will be played in Australia and New Zealand. Sehwag said he was fine with that reasoning but was unaware that Dhoni had said, after the February 19 match against Australia, that he couldn't fit all three openers in a given XI because of their slowness in the field."No we didn't know that," Sehwag said. "I didn't know what he said and what's going on in the media. But we decided, we had a meeting, he chatted with everyone, with Gautam and myself and Tendulkar; he explained that he wanted to give chances to youngsters so youngsters can play all the matches here because the next World Cup is also here, so they'll get an idea of how the pitches behave in Australia."Sehwag was asked if accommodating all three openers in an XI was not feasible. "I don't think so, we played together in the World Cup and we won games," he said. "We want to give chances to youngsters and it's good for every team to just keep rotating players so they will be fresh for the next game; so that's what I think [it is about]." When asked about their fielding, Sehwag asked: "Did you see my catch?" and smiled. He was referring to the full-length diving catch he took at midwicket to send Mahela Jayawardene back. "We are same for the last 10 years. Nothing has changed," he said.Sehwag was then asked if the 20 runs that the younger legs are supposed to save in the field are a good enough reason to keep persisting with then even as they continue to flounder with the bat. "You have to ask Dhoni again," he said. "What he told us is he has to give chances to youngsters; they will come here and play the next World Cup. That's what he told us."Is he now going to have a chat with Dhoni? "Why should I have a chat with him? He is the captain, he is the leader; if he and the coach think we should give breaks to the top order, that's fine, I am okay with that. I don't have any issues with that."Is Sehwag surprised at this apparent lack of communication? Shouldn't he now confront the captain? "I am available for all the matches. It depends on the captain and the coach, what XI they pick. If they give the reason that we want to give chances to youngsters and you take a break, I am happy with that."In principle, though, Sehwag remains a supporter of the rotation policy, and said he had been advocating it for a long time. "I have been saying for a couple of years
Inter Milan Jersey that we have got to rotate. Give more chances to youngsters because they will play more matches in the coming years. I told Dhoni before the last World Cup that if [Suresh] Raina, Rohit [Sharma], Virat Kohli play 100 matches they will get good experience so that they can fire at the right time. So it's good thinking."On the surface, there seems to be a serious lack of communication in the Indian camp. After India win a game, Gautam Gambhir says the game should not have been taken into the last over. The next day, Dhoni says the set top-order batsmen should finish games off. There are various reasons given for the rotation policy, and if Sehwag is to be believed he has learned from the press that Dhoni thinks the top-order trio is too slow in the field. Despite all that, Sehwag says the team is one happy unit. "We are one unit. We are very happy. He is the captain. He can say whatever he wants to say, and he has been addressing the media for the last couple of years. We are okay with that.

Merkin to pay US$410mil
NEW YORK: Money manager Ezra Merkin has agreed to pay US$410mil to settle a lawsuit brought by New York state that accused Merkin of secretly steering client money to Ponzi schemer Bernard Madoff, according to New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman.
“By holding Mr Merkin accountable, this settlement will help bring justice,” Schneiderman said in a statement on Sunday. “We have recovered over US$400mil for the investors and charities that were harmed by history's largest Ponzi scheme.”
Justice Richard Lowe of New York state court signed off on the settlement on
NFL Jerseys Cheap Friday, Schneiderman's office said.
Under the agreement, Merkin would pay US$405mil to compensate investors over three years, Schneiderman's office said. The other US$5mil will go to the state.
Attorney Andy Levander, who represents Merkin, said in statement Merkin “is pleased to have achieved a resolution that is fair to his investors, many of whom are friends and institutions that he and his family have cared about deeply.”
Investors might receive over 40% of their losses, Schneiderman's office said. Those who did not know Merkin was sending their money to Madoff will get more.
The settlement does not resolve a separate case brought against Merkin by Irving Picard, the trustee seeking money for all of Madoff's victims. Picard is trying to claw back US$500mil that Merkin and his funds withdrew from accounts with Madoff.
Amanda Remus, a spokeswoman for Picard, did not respond to an email seeking a comment on the status of any settlement talks with Merkin over Picard's lawsuit.
The New York lawsuit, brought in 2009, said Merkin “recklessly” fed some US$2.4bil from investors in his funds into Madoff's Ponzi scheme, while claiming he actively managed their money.
Merkin held himself out as an “investing guru” and collected more than US$470mil in management and other fees while he was really a “master marketer,” the lawsuit said.
The lawsuit accused Merkin of self-dealing, reckless conduct and gross negligence.
Charities and other non-profits are among those whose funds went to
Cheap Jerseys Wholesale Madoff through Merkin without their knowledge.
Merkin, a graduate of Columbia College and Harvard Law School, was a trustee, along with Madoff, of Yeshiva University, a Jewish university in New York. The university lost US$110mil to Madoff.
Merkin resigned as non-executive chairman of GMAC LLC, the financing arm of General Motors, after the Madoff scandal. GMAC is now Ally Financial.
Madoff pleaded guilty in March 2009 to perpetrating the largest Ponzi scheme in US history and is serving a 150-year prison sentence.
Picard has recovered or entered into agreements to recover more than US$9bil, over half the US$17.3bil in principal estimated lost by Madoff customers who filed claims, according to the trustee's website.
