Political Preston This blog contains views and opinions of a Preston resident regarding local and national politics and current affairs.

I was in the Lancs Evening Post
I was in the LEP yesterday on a two page spread about political party activists in Preston. It concerned what responses we got from residents on the doorstep due to the MPs expenses furore. I told them I didn't get much hassle at all. In St Georges and Deepdale we had a high turnout to ensure the BNP didn't get in. (They did anyway).

Mark Hendrick MP has agreed to visit a pharmacy as part of the "Building Bridges" campaign to showcase the great strides pharmacy has made in health care provision in the past decade - due to the Government's focus on increasing local health provision. The pharmacy he will be visiting is the late night Lloydspharmacy on Deepdale Road. Date to be finalised.

A little mention of the Conservative PPC Nerissa Warner O'Neill was also in the LEP. It said she promises to publish her expenses online and hold an annual event to tell constituents what she has done for them in the past year. Seriously though what were the local conservative association thinking of choosing somone with a name like that to be their PPC? Her kids are called Wayland and Nimue. Doesn't this just show how snooty the local conservatives are? Do they not know that Preston constituency is solidly working class? And she's not from the north but from down south - what does she know of the northern working class?

Mark Hendrick MP and his expenses
Met Mark Hendrick MP last Thursday at the meeting at the Town Hall. He gave a run down of his expenses. There was no flipping of homes or tax avoidance. No over claiming of council tax. No claims for duck houses or chandeliers. Mundane claims only (much to the dissatisfaction of the local rag!). The LEP has been mischieviously making a fuss about his claim for a bed and coffee table. The fact is that MPs had what has been come to be known as the 'John Lewis' list and not a 'Primark' list. For those who don't know about John Lewis suffice to say that its stock of wares is a tad on the expensive side BUT let's not be hypocritical - if our employer gave us a John Lewis list we too would buy things from within it. No one in the office would get on their high horse and say they would rather go to Primark or Pound Shop instead! So why do we expect MPs to?

Yes some MPs have clearly been dishonest and fraudulent - but not Mark Hendrick. Sorry LEP and Daily Telegraph, look elsewhere!
