Fishersgate Children's Centre
The Fishersgate based Family & Children's Centre in Gardner Road now looks like it is very near to completion. As I passed this morning more of the new windows were being installed, to go with the new glass doors that are already in place.

Updates
Two old stories to be updated..
1. I am pleased to say that the Sub-Post Office in Portslade has now re-opened.
2. The former Woolworths in Southwick Square is to become a Chinese Supermarket. They have an application to become an off-licence in at the moment. What another one! There are already two outlets selling booze in Southwick Square. I predict we will not see this application have a clear run.

Loco Toledo
Have you seen that advert for train travel? I was there on Brighton Station when it was filmed. That poor man had to run up and down looking like a green lemon for take after take. The trains wouldn't wait of course so they had to change platforms to find a stationery train. I have been trying to see if I have been caught in the background, as I was standing on platform one and the cameras were pointing that way at one stage. Trouble is the crowd is seen so briefly that I cannot yet claim to be on national tv at prime time!
Incidently I think Loco Toledo is also the man who is the Tenor in the insurance adverts.

Mr Monk
If you are a fan of the TV series Monk then you may like to know that there are several books based on the show available. They are all original stories. I have borrowed them from the Library and they are a good read. There are eight titles, written by Lee Goldberg.
There is a boxed set of the show years 1 - 7 out in the USA but I have yet to find if it is being issued in the UK. The final year - 8 - is now showing in the USA.

Lower And Lower
Watching a programme on the effect of aging on the human body I learnt that the lose of hearing - which a natural part of the process - starts with the highest pitched sounds, then the middling high sounds become indistinct and so on. As the pitch of women's voices tends to be in the mid high range it occured to me that this fact may be the reason why men above a certain age seem to 'throw a deafen' when spoken to by a woman!
(Yes, I know the well known phrase is not 'throw a deafen', but the site ruled that the word that should be used is offensive. I hope I never feel compelled to write an item on chickens!!!!)

Thar It Fell
Have you noticed that the chimney falling down during the advert for an energy company is the chimney of the old Shoreham Power Station? I was there that day - well early on a Saturday morning to be precise. There were crowds of people and the Coast Road was closed. A lot of local people were very sad and there was more than one soggy eye! I wrote a most maudlin account of the event for my Community Correspondant piece in the Brighton Argus. Actualy as we were paid by the line I spun that account out a bit.It isn't every day a local landmark bites the dust - a lot of dust. But who now even looks at the view and thinks of the old chimney. The new one has been there so long now that it seems to have been there for ever.
Something else that seems to have been there forever - though not laterly in a good way - is the Fishersgate Dome. When the old chimney just across the other side of the Harbour was felled the Dome had not even been started. Now eight years since the foundations were laid the Dome has not even been finished.

I Could've Supported Bob
Walking around Southwick this morning I spied more and more scaffolding being installed as works of all kinds continue or begin. I now realise the mistake I have made. I should have bought shares in a scaffolding company before the boom began to rev up again.

Flu Friendless?
West Sussex Flu Friends helpline has now launched. If you are in the position of having the need of someone to collect your antiviral but do not know who to call then you can call the WSX Flu Friend Helpline on 0300 100 1822. They will take details including the reference number you will have been given to obtain your Tamiflu. The helpline can then arrange for a British Red Cross worker to collect your Tamiflu and deliver it to your home, where you will need to show some proof of your identity.
Please only use this service if you realy cannot find anyone else to collect your antivirus.
