Wakefield Angling Club Junior Section

Wakefield Juniors 1st Summer Match

Junior Section Summer Series

Wednesday 23rd May was the start of the junior summer series. The first match was on Flanshaw Dam Wakefield. The dam is a small fishery measuring about 40 yards by 60 yards and is approx five feet deep. It is a mixed fishery and is situated just off Flanshaw Lane opposite the Eagle Public House. The match started at 6pm and fished until 9pm. I watched two good quality fish being caught each putting up a good fight. Young Elisia Rose, aged 8, caught a 9lb 4oz carp on her pole at about 11meters. Josh Reynolds caught very steadily throughout the match: Mr Ice (Josh) is a seasoned junior winning the NFA Individual Cadet in the National a couple of years ago. You may have read in previous reports of Tom Budby. Tom loves this kind of water and is in the main, a carp venue angler. However Tom has proved himself on the hardest of canals in the winter months. Tonight Joel Whitley was finding it hard to get bites but kept at it and had a good weight by the end of the match. Josh Mullarky was enjoy the evening catching some good fish including a good carp . For some of the juniors whose first match this was it was not easy. The lowest weight was 4oz as some of the new anglers have only just started fishing after attending our beginners classes led by Frank Wright and Harry Lodge and practical lessons by Steve Arabskji.

First Summer Match on Canal
Twenty five members of Wakefield Angling Club turned out for the first canal match of the summer series hoping that the fish were still taking the bait as they had been doing in pleasure sessions during the week. Most anglers wanted to be on the bottom wides but with the pegs going up into the 150s some were going to be disappointed.  As soon as the match started the Bream responded for Andy Beech the current Club Champion . Beech had opted for the long pole fishing Red Maggot over chopped worm and caster at peg 125 and in the first hour put 20lbs of Bream up to 3lbs into the keepnet. Champion junior angler Joel Whitely at the next peg was also picking up fish regularly and landed about 10lbs of Bream within the hour. The shoal of Bream were clearly in the area and after a slow start Paul Hirst on 126 peg found the fish responding to his feeder approach and continued to catch steadily for the rest of the match. Meanwhile along the rest of the length anglers were only taking the odd Bream with the Roach being conspicuous by their absence.  Beech continued catching at fast pace up to the third hour into the match and then the shoal did a Houdini and disappeared. As the fish were brought to the scales it was Paul Hirst who set the standard and his weight of 41lbs 12ozs was a new club record for the canal. Hirsts elation was short lived and within 2 minutes he no longer held the record after watching Beech put 43lbs 12ozs onto the scales to take the record and trouser £60-00 for a good days sport.

NJAA Knockout Qualifier 2007
National Junior Angling Association Knockout 2007

Langwith Lakes York

Saturday 12th May saw the four best junior teams in the North East battling for a place in the finals of the NJAA knockout 2007.

As some of the best juniors in the country took each other on this promised to be a hard match and the young anglers settled down well under the pressure. As I walk the bank and get word of who is catching what I usually get a feel for how the match is going. However, on Saturday the competition was intense and it was difficult to see who was in front.

When I stopped to see how Joel Whitley was getting on he responded in his usual cool, calm and confident manner that he was “getting a few bits’. When I asked how May Potter was getting on she said “OK, bites are a bit slow” even though I had just watched her catch two fish in as many minutes. Josh Reynolds was battling on and catching fish but not at the rate he would have liked. Luke Wrezeck said he thought the angler from Worksop would win the section as he had been catching steadily. Nathan Murphy was fishing well but under pressure from one of the Leeds team. As usual Nathan countered by quietly concentrating his energy on fishing his swim. I didn’t see Matty Mee catch but he was quietly confident saying little as I asked him how he was doing. His dad said he thought that the Barnsley angler was in front.

The match was a five hour match and it was non stop pressure for everyone. The anglers knew the high standard of competitors they were taking on and of course, this just increased the commitment to win. No-one could afford to waste any effort and knew they had to pull out all the stops to come out on top. They all wanted a chance to win the prestigious NJAA Knockout on the 2nd June 2007, and only the first and second get though to the final on Larford Lakes, Stourport.

Happily, the sustained efforts paid off and Wakefield Juniors won the day. Paul Stead, Leeds manager, presented the trophies and prizes which were kindly donated by United Baits.

Final Match in Winter Series

On Saturday 24th March Wakefield and Barnsley juniors and intermediates fished the final match in the winter series. This winter series has been very challenging for all the young anglers from the two clubs involved. They have battled through wind, rain and sleet and have demonstrated angling skills of the highest standards. As the organiser of the series I have personally been very impressed by the young people taking part and the individual skills they have shown. They have all shown a steely determination, positive attitude, and team spirit, yet maintained an open friendliness between the two opposing teams which shows a fine example of sportsmanship at its very best. I am extremely proud to be involved with these young anglers.

Saturdays match took place at Healey Dam, one of Wakefield Angling Club’s premier waters. John Briggs, one of the bailiffs for the water, spent time preparing the fishing pegs and surrounding area for the match and we would like to express our thanks to him for all his hard work.

Saturday it was bitterly cold with a northerly wind blowing across the Dam. Only two of those fishing failed to catch fish and Scott Foster of Barnsley, catching carp and roach appeared to be leading the field in the first half of the match. With about an hour left to fish May Potter caught a sizeable mirror carp to secure the individual winner’s place on the day.

Throughout the series May has done very well winning her section on a number of the matches - today she was determined this would be her match. With about an hour to go May hooked into a large fish and the message went around the dam May was into something substantial.

Landing large fish on light to medium tackle is not easy so May had to take care not to loose this one since it could decide the individual winner on the day. May took her time and using all her skill and soon had the fish in her landing net and then safely into her keep net. Barnsley fought back with some good catches but even so they could not catch up to May,s overall weight.

May Potter

In the intermediate sections Tom Budby, of Wakefield, led from the start and held his lead to take the match. Tom has fished consistently well throughout the series, winning matches and sections, and is an asset to the intermediate section.

Since this was the last match of the series the presentation took place at the Horse and Jockey, Horbury with pie and peas provided for all taking part. Steve Arabskji, Wakefield junior coach, expressed his thanks to all taking part before announcing the day’s results. Alan Davies, Barnsley Manager and Harry Lodge, Wakefield Angling Club president, were also present and thanked the organisers and all the anglers for taking part in the match series. Harry, a great supporter of the junior sections, made mention of how impressed he has been by the high standards of the anglers taking part in the series.

Angling

Wakefield Angling Club is Not Only about Juniors

My reports are usually about Wakefield’s young anglers. However there is far more to Wakefield Angling Club than our successful juniors.

We have some very good anglers with disabilities who hold a number of matches each year. The club always welcomes new anglers with disabilities and has a number of accessible waters for people with mobility issues. We are actively looking for affordable ways to improve access to as many of our waters as possible.

We are delighted with the recently completed improvements to the Calder and Hebble Canal length behind the Bingley Arms which now has an access ramp and a spacious car park with a levelled and smoothed surface. However, to maintain security, a club key is required to gain access to the car park and anglers with certain disabilities may require assistance with this. This work was undertaken with the support of the British Waterways Trust.

The club has a ladies section and will be taking part in this year’s ladies national championships on the Calder and Hebble canal. A number of club matches are held throughout the year for the ladies section. To give more comfort for lady anglers Flanshaw Dam has a ladies toilet that is kept locked and lady members receive a free key to the toilet.

The club president, Harry Lodge is a member of our veterans’ section who enjoy fishing the club’s veteran matches and of course, the Veterans’ National. Veterans are also welcome to fish other club open matches.

Over the years Wakefield Angling Club has demonstrated its commitment to the community in a range of activities.

We run a programme of taster sessions for prospective anglers in association with Wakefield Metropolitan Council and other agencies. These sessions are designed to give people who think they might be interested in taking up angling a chance to try it out at a coached session.

The club has worked on making our club water more attractive and accessible to the community. An ongoing project lead by Harry Lodge is Walkers Pond just off Flanshaw Lane. Although only recently acquired by the club very significant changes can already be seen at this water. The club has not made these changes in isolation but has informed and involved the local community. Harry Lodge, the club president, has attended residents groups meetings to explain the plans for Walkers Pond (a full press release will be issued when the Pond is ready to be opened to its members). The juniors have been involved in this project and have already constructed a number of bird boxes to be sighted around the pond.

Wakefield Angling Club is a progressive club that takes into account our environment, wildlife and of course the greater community within Wakefield. Membership is totally open and available to everyone in the community.

Wakefield Angling club is one of four angling clubs in the country to hold the prestigious Club Mark Award from Sport England. All schools in the Wakefield area are constantly updated about the club’s activities (by email).

Any school that is not included and would like the updates and newsletter can ask to be added to the distribution list by contacting David Speight at silverbugle@aol.com

Anyone requiring information regarding the club can visit our web site or contact Harry Lodge mobile 0775 236 1070. Information about our juniors from David Speight again via web site or mobile: 0795 808 3224.

Club Mark

Club Mark No Time to Sit on Our Laurels

Being Club Mark accredited does not mean we can sit back on our laurels. Sport England Club Mark inspectors carry out random checks on clubs to make sure they are keeping up the good standards for which they achieved the award. On Wednesday 7th March 2007 Wakefield Angling Club had such a visit from Louise Huntley a Club Mark assessor. Wakefield Angling Club is one of only four angling clubs so far to be accredited with the prestigious Club Mark award.

Harry Lodge the club president, is fully aware of the importance of keeping up good standards and working practices Louise Huntley attended one of the club’s junior evenings. The club has good documented evidence of its success on the BBC web site, Wakefield Express community porthole by the way of Blog, and also from many newspaper articles and radio spots. Recent improvements to facilities include: The installation of a ramp for disabled anglers on the canal by the Bingley arms; current work to regenerate Walkers Pond off Flanshaw Lane; Last year’s face lift at Flanshaw Dam where a new hard surface path around the Dam was built facilitating easier access to all pegs for those anglers with disabilities. The club has also proactively reached out to the community at large to recruit new anglers from across the diverse society and cultures which exist in the area. And is in contact with all the schools in the area for young anglers 7 years of age upwards.

This had to be the Hardest Days Fishing

This had to be the Hardest Days Fishing

The match on Saturday 24th February 2007 between Wakefield and Barnsley juniors and intermediates took place on the Navigation stretch of the Calder and Hebble Canal. This is one of the two club’s favourite waters but this match must have been the hardest day’s fishing of the series.

Junior winner again was Joel Whitely (Wakefield) with a good catch of small fish on Bloodworm in the margins and the boat canal and caster on the far side. Joel’s catch included an excellent chubb of 2lb 15oz and his total weight was 4lb - impressive considering the days conditions.

                                Joel

‘Rock on’ Tommy McGrath (Barnsley junior) worked hard throughout the match and in the end caught a nice roach of 10oz, winning his section with 12ozs.

                    Rock on Tommy

May Potter, in her first season with Wakefield has proven to be an asset. She came from a commercial fisheries background and joined to Wakefield to widen her knowledge of angling to include canals and other club waters. May said she has learned a lot from Wakefield’s coach Steve, even in the first few weeks with the club.

Fishing on the intermediate sections was very tough with many of the anglers not catching; Luke Arabskyj’s perseverance got him a few small fish giving him a winning weight of 3oz.

All the young anglers taking part did great on this very hard das fishing and deserve congratulating.

Wakefield Angling Club’s Beginners’ Class goes fro

Wednesday 28th February 2007 brought 4 more new members to the club bring the beginners class to 18 and taking our club’s girls to 9.

The subject of wednesday’s coaching with Harry Lodge and Frank Wright was an important aspect of angling: the Country Code, the environment, wildlife and care of fish. This then moved on to fish recognition, and anatomy and physiology of fish.

The club is very keen that all its members respect the club’s waters: protecting the environment and the care of fish and wildlife is paramount.

The club has recently purchased a new water: Walkers Pond. To conclude the evening, the young anglers enjoyed putting together bird boxes which will be put up around Walkers Pond.

On Saturday 3rd March 2007 nine of the new anglers had a practical coaching session fishing with the coach Steve Arabskji at Flanshaw Dam. Again they looked at plumbing, presentation, shelves and feeding the swim. We will continue with this programme until the young anglers are totally confident. This will build their confidence for fishing other waters. It was a good session on Saturday and all the beginners caught fish, some even stayed on to continue fish after the coaching session had ended.
