Dore Male Voice Choir

New Musical Director

Elizabeth Hampshire becomes the new Music Director of Dore Male Voice Choir on 1 May 2010, in succession to Paul Green.

Paul has been our MD for 10 years. We owe him an enormous debt of gratitude for all his work with the Choir - and even for some of his jokes... We wish Paul and Margaret every happiness and a well-deserved rest.

Elizabeth comes from a musical family. Three generations, including grandfather, uncles and cousins, have sung in Mousehole MVC, Cornwall, from 1920 to the present day.

She studied at Kesteven College, Nottingham University, and taught music in schools, including school choirs, instrumental groups and soloists, for more than 40 years. She staged many school musical productions, including “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat” and “The Daniel Jazz”, and was also a fine accompanist. She also gave private lessons in piano, singing, recorder and music theory, helping many young musicians gain excellent results in the Associated Board exams.

Elizabeth was in demand as a recitalist for more than 20 years, performing at the Royal Albert Hall, the City Hall in Sheffield, and many cathedrals, churches and village halls.

Elizabeth was the accompanist and deputy Music Director for Houghton Main MVC for 20 years. In 1996 she became the accompanist for Worrall MVC but within a year was offered the post of Music Director. She made several overseas tours with Worrall, including a memorable visit to Spain in 2000 where the choir sang in the Monastery Church at Montserrat and at Barcelona Cathedral.

She led Worrall to a wonderful first place, against stiff competition from Welsh and English Choirs, in the Welsh Choir of the Year competition in 2003.

Ill health caused Elizabeth to retire from Worrall, but thanks to the great skill of doctors at Northern General and Weston Park hospitals she is now ready to work again. She was “thrilled beyond words” when she was invited to apply for the post of MD for Dore MVC, and says that being offered the post is a dream come true.

Elizabeth is married to Stuart and they live in Sheffield.

Choir's "Crossing" Concert..
We enjoyed our concert at The Crossing in Worksop on 27 February, and judging by our reception we believe our audience did too! The Crossing is a great venue to sing in, with good acoustics. All choir members are grateful to Mary Cobbold for being our accompanist for the evening (and recent rehearsals) in the absence of Adrian Jordan. Our guest, Tim Boswell, played some wonderful violin music. Paul Green, our music director, accompanied Tim on piano as well as conducting the choir and telling some of his renowned jokes – though perhaps one was a trifle bizarre.

2008 Highlights, 2009 Plans
2008

The Choir's two Christmas Concerts in Dore Church were as usual very well attended. Our guests, Take Notes, a string quartet, were a nice contrast to the Choir, particularly in terms of age, as Take Notes are all still at school!

Other highlights from 2008 were an enjoyable Choir Gala concert at All Saints Church, Ecclesall in October - our guests included Cantores Novae, Vivien Pike's choir for young women and girls - and a concert at Rugby given with our friends from Wigston and St Edmundsbury Male Voice Choirs. We are told that the sound of the three choirs together was very impressive.

We've been quite successful recruiting new members during the year, and had a particularly worthwhile open evening in November. Membership is still open; if you're interested in joining us, please see our website -
www.doremalevoicechoir.com or contact any member of the Choir.

2009

We have a concert at Worksop on 28 February. We're on tour to Cyprus in the autumn, and our Christmas concerts at Dore Church are already booked for 11 and 12 December! Planning for other events is under way. It looks like another busy year!
