Friday Feeling Clare Wale, deputy editor of the Advertiser and Review, takes a look back at the week's events across the region

An inspiration . . .
CHRISTMAS just won't be the same in Steeple Claydon!
Sue and Tiddler Carter, who have lived in the village for many years are moving next week and with them goes the Christmas lights which have illuminated the village for the past 11 years.
The serious side of their efforts is that they have raised more than £30,000 with the displays, which has been donated to cancer charities at both local and national level.
They should be very proud of their achievements, and we wish them well in their new home.

ANOTHER inspiring story this week from Elaine Wootton-Haley, also from Steeple Claydon, who has shaved off all her hair to raise money in memory of her sister, Susan, who died from bowel cancer in January.
What an amazing way to pay tribute to her sister and raise much needed cash for cancer charities across the country.

Luring in the shoppers
AT LAST! Buckingham could soon be welcoming national retailers into the town as part of a new development in the town centre.
While part of Buckingham's charm has always been its quaint, individual shops, I've always been of the opinion that some well-known names would only add to the mix and encourage more people to visit.
It may not prove to be healthy for my bank balance, but it could be exactly what is required to lure people into Buckingham!
Add your voice to the debate by adding a comment or by emailing me at clare.wale@ccnltd.com

SO the debate over the future of the British Grand Prix is still rumbling on.
This week, the British Racing Drivers' Club, which owns the Silverstone Circuit, unveiled multi-million pound plans to develop the circuit, ensuring the Grand Prix remains in Northants beyond 2009.
While I sympathise with the residents of Silverstone, who face the threat of new houses as part of the proposals, let's hope the BRDC and the relevant authorities do everything they can to keep the Grand Prix at Silverstone.
If they don't, the potential fall-out from job losses and the effect on the local economy could be devastating.

CONGRATULATIONS to Bicester teacher, Daniel Burton, who has scooped the first BBC History Magazine Teacher of the Year Award.
It must be one of the hardest - and most rewarding - jobs you can do, so to win such an award must just be the icing on the cake!

THINGS are changing on the Advertiser and Review's website www.buckinghamtoday.co.uk

Inconvenienced!
SO shoppers in Buckingham are being barred from the town's community centre toilets from next month.
While I can understand the reasoning behind the Buckingham Community Association committee's decision, we need to make sure the relevant authorities now do something to improve facilities in the town.
If we are going to attract tourists and shoppers to Buckingham we need to make sure we take care of them when they visit instead of making their time here something they remember for rather more unpleasant reasons!
On a similar note, it seems a cut in the amount of time visitors can park in Brackley's Market Square is taking its toll on trade. One businesswoman, has been forced to close her children's clothes shop for a variety of reasons - but  claims parking problems is one of them.
It's a tough one, but I personally believe it's time the authorities realised the car is here to stay and make proper provision for parking - if not, people WILL choose to shop in out-of-town shopping centres or at supermarkets where there is always an abundance of free parking.

CONGRATULATIONS to Scooch for making it to the finals of the Eurovision Song Contest in April, especially singer Natalie Powers - a former Buckingham girl.
I must admit, I did feel a little bit sorry for them this week when their song Flying The Flag (For You) was completely panned by the critics.
Yes, it's camp, yes, it's cheesy and yes, some of the lyrics leave a bit to be desired - but then it is the Eurovision Song Contest, and not the Ivor Novellos. We all know we won't win, but let's at least unstiffen our upper lips and have a bit of a laugh!!

CONGRATULATIONS also to Advertiser and Review editor Rob Gibbard and news editor Joanne Done and all our readers for raising a fantastic £1,500 for Comic Relief.
Rob and Joanne raised the money by being locked in a cage at Tesco in Buckingham last Friday morning and the rest was raised from money donated from the sale of every copy of last week's Advertiser and Review.
The full story and pictures are available in the paper, out today, and on www.buckinghamtoday.co.uk

All change!

THINGS are changing - both across the region and in the Advertiser and Review news room!

This week, we are launching a new way of getting in touch - via text and picture messaging - so there is  no excuse not to send us your news and views and pictures of what's going on in your part of the world.

You can send your text messages to BANEWS (space) followed by your message (maximum of 160 characters) and send to 82189. Texts cost 25p plus normal network rates

Sports texts can be sent to BASPORT - other details as above

Picture texts can be sent to BAPIX and sent to 07843 500911

Full details of all these services will appear in the Advertiser and Review next Friday - so don't miss it!

SO what do you think about the plans for 3,000 new homes in Towcester?
Developers behind the proposals, which could see the town double in size over the next few years, are holding exhibitions in the town to present their ideas to the public.
According to the latest reports, the development will also include new employment, a local centre with medical facilities, a new primary and secondary school, open space and improvements to the Abthorpe junction of the A43.
It's a subject close to my heart, as I have lived there for the past seven years, and I believe that as long as the development is treated carefully it could have a lot of long-term  benefits - not least a bypass!
Let me know what you think. Text (see above), email me at clare.wale@ccnltd.com or editorial@buckinghamadvertiser.co.uk.
For the full story visit  www.buckinghamtoday.co.uk

THINGS could also be changing as far as transport in the region is concerned.
The East West rail link, which could see trains passing through Bicester and Winslow to Milton Keynes, could well be up and running by 2012 according to this week's Buckingham and Winslow Advertiser and Bicester Review.
Residents in both towns will have heard this all before, but this time there does seem to be real support for it, both on a local and national level.
Personally, I think it will prove to be a great alternative to the car and could help to relieve congestion on our clogged up roads. This will only happen though as long as fares are kept to a reasonable level. We'll wait and see . . .

I WAS interested to hear in the news last weekend, about the decline of darts and other traditional pub games due to the increase in the number of gastropubs in the country.
It's something we are looking to do a story on so if you have any views contact me on clare.wale@ccnltd.com, text or write to 61-62 Well Street, Buckingham, Bucks, MK18 1EN.

AND finally . . . At the time of writing, Advertiser and Review editor Rob Gibbard is trapped inside a cage at Tesco, London Road, Buckingham. If you are in the area this morning make sure you pop along and donate some cash to Comic Relief so we can get him released!
Make sure you send us pictures of your Red Nose Day events. Text them to the number above or email us at editorial@buckinghamadvertiser.co.uk!

Red Nose Day update
IF you happen to be in Buckingham on Friday make sure you get along to Tesco on London Road where editor Rob Gibbard and news editor Joanne Done will be helping to raise money for Comic Relief.
They will be sharing a three-hour stint locked up in a cage outside the store and will be held to ransom for the princely sum of £300! It's up to you to make sure we raise the money to get them released so give generously!
In the meantime, make sure you let us know what you are up to on Friday by emailing me at clare.wale@ccnltd.com or editorial@buckinghamadvertiser.co.uk

Welcome!
WELCOME to my first posting on Friday Feeling - a new blog written especially for readers of the Advertiser and Review.
The aim of the blog is to encourage discussion about the issues which have been raised in the region over the past seven days and invite YOU to have your say on the paper and what we do. You can also tell me about any events you are organising, a story you have for the paper or website, or you can make contact simply to get something off your chest!
These are exciting times for our newspaper  and website and we want all of our readers to be part of it - so there has never been a better chance for you to get involved!

OUR readers in Bicester had a real glimpse into the future this week with a first look at images of the town's new £70million six-screen cinema and restaurant complex.
Coupled with our story on the front page about how a new report suggests that Bicester's property prices are  booming, it looks as though residents have plenty to smile about and look forward to!
Interesting though, that the indicators used to measure the vitality of a town include increasing numbers of traffic wardens, busy trains, long bus queues, muddy 4x4s and streets crowded with parked cars - aren't these the things that are put there to try our patience?
For the full story grab a copy of the Bicester Review or log onto our website www.buckinghamtoday.co.uk

THERE has been much talk, and many heated discussions,  in the Advertiser and Review news room over recent days regarding supermarkets.
While many of us still regularly use the region's supermarkets for convenience and to take advantage of cheaper prices, there are definitely an increasing number of those who are making an effort to use farmers' markets and avoid supermarkets altogether.
What do you think? Let me know by posting a message or by emailing me at clare.wale@ccnltd.com

IT was  really sad to see pictures of the fire at the Salvation Army Hall in Buckingham this week.
Unfortunately, these are incidents that are happening all too frequently in the town and we hope the police will be monitoring the town carefully to ensure those responsible are caught quickly. In the meantime, we hope it's not too long before the damage is repaired and work at the hall can continue as normal.

ONLY a week to go until Red Nose Day - are you doing anything to raise money?
Here at the Advertiser and Review, 5p from the sale of every copy of the Buckingham and Winslow Advertiser, Brackley and Towcester Advertiser and Bicester Review (where sold) will go to Comic Relief - so make sure you get your copy next Friday and do your bit!
If you or your friends and work colleagues are doing anything to raise money make sure you let us know. You can either contact the newsdesk on 01280 827940, email us at editorial@buckinghamadvertiser.co.uk or write to us at the Advertiser and Review, 61-62 Well Street, Buckingham, Bucks, MK18 1EN.
