Haiti Earthquake
Haiti Earthquake

Following the devastating recent earthquake, 2000 Shelterboxes have been despatched to HAITI accompanied by a team of Rotarians.

Each box contains a tent for up to ten people along with other emergency survival equipment.

The Shelterbox scheme was a project developed by the Rotary Club of Helston-Lizard in Cornwall
thanks to the work of Rotarian Tom Henderson OBE.

ShelterBox is an international disaster relief charity that delivers emergency shelter, warmth and dignity to people affected by disaster worldwide.

Supplies of boxes constantly need to be replenished for response to world emergencies.

For complete info. or to donate,

please go to:

The Rotary Club of Abbeydale was able to send £4,200 to the Haiti Shelterbox appeal. Part of this money came from donations, part from the club funds and part from money raised at a Burns' Supper which was held in conjunction with the Rotary Club of Dronfield and was supported by members of the Rotary Club of Sheffield Vulcan.

Boxes were funded by Abbeydale when the people of Sheffield supported Sheffield boxer Herol 'Bomber' Graham's 24 hour non-stop 'Skipathon' in 2007.

R
OTARY'S FINAL PUSH TO ERADICATE POLIO

FROM THE WORLD IN THE LARGEST PUBLIC HEALTH INITIATIVE THE WORLD HAS EVER KNOWN.

The goal of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative is to ensure that no child will ever again know the crippling effects of polio.

The Partners in this project are the World Health Organization, Rotary International, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and UNICEF

Those of us of a certain age may well recall standing in line at school to be given the polio vaccination, given on a sugar lump. Polio is a killer disease and again many of us will recall school friends who suffered from it.

In fact it was not until as late as 1982 that the World Health Organisation declared the UK free from natural polio infection and 1993 when the last person from abroad was diagnosed in this country.

In 1985 Rotary International decided to embark upon a campaign to eradicate polio worldwide and by 1988 it was joined by the World Health Organisation, UNICEF and other health related organisations in its efforts.

Since this time, cases of Polio have dropped by 99% !

The project was called “Polio Plus” and was the most ambitious programme ever entered into by this service organisation. For more than 20 years Rotarians around the world have raised both the profile of the disease and more importantly money to pay for vaccinations.

Through the efforts of Rotary International and its partners only 4 countries are still affected by this dreadful disease – Nigeria, India, Pakistan and Afghanistan, although it is always there ready to reappear as it did suddenly last year in Guinea.

Konnie Huq, former Blue Peter presenter, recently witnessed and assisted with vaccinations in Uttar Pradesh, India, alongside a team of 86 British Rotarians.

So impressed by what Rotarians have done in raising both profile and cash, The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation has pledged a new matching grant of $255m. In response to this grant, Rotary will raise $100 million in matching funds. In November 2007, RI received a $100 million Gates Foundation grant, which Rotary committed to match by raising $100 million. The total contributed by The Gates Foundation and Rotary now stands at $555 million.

CHARITY DINNER
IN AID OF
SOUTH YORKSHIRE
AND HALLAMSHIRE
CLUBS FOR YOUNG PEOPLE
(Registered charity No. 523930)
Guest Speaker:
The Rt. Hon.
David Blunkett MP
Former Home Secretary

When Alan Young began his year as President of the Rotary Club of Abbeydale, one of his wishes, in addition to the other work done for young people, was for the Club to do something which would make a positive difference to the lives of Young People in the region, particularly when we are all concerned about anti-social behaviour and its related problems.  Alan feels that if we all do our little bit, in whatever way, we can make a positive difference. Supporting the excellent work of the SYHCYP seemed a very appropriate way of making that difference.

The Rt Hon.David Blunkett MP with Alan Young, President of the Rotary Club of Abbeydale (right), and Barrie Cottingham, President of South Yorkshire and Hallamshire Clubs for Young People.

Plans are well under way and tickets are selling well for the Dinner to be held at Baldwin's Omega, Brincliffe Hill, (Off Psalter Lane), Sheffield S11 9DF, on Thursday 7th January 2010, 7.00 for 7.30pm.  The Rt. Hon. David Blunkett MP has enthusiastically agreed to be our Guest Speaker.  President Alan met Barrie Cottingham, President of SYHCYP at Mr Blunkett's office recently for a club photo shoot.  Mr Blunkett is very supportive of the cause and promised to make his talk as entertaining as possible.

Mr Blunkett issued a statement via his London office:

"I'm very pleased to support the Rotary Club in their sterling efforts to raise funds for an extraordinarily good cause.  The benefit that comes from young people having positive out of school activities in the evening and at the weekend, and being motivated to both enjoy themselves and contribute to the well-being of others, is incalculable.

I hope that there will be a really good response to what I will endeavour to make an entertaining and enjoyable evening".

Funds raised at the evening will be used to support the Young Peoples Clubs' expanding Senior Member Training and Mentoring Programme to provide personal development in terms of leadership skills, confidence building, teamwork and increased self esteem.  The programme aims to provide young people with accredited training qualifications which will enhance job prospects and employability.  This is done in small manageable training courses which lead to participation in the National OCN accredited training matrix.

NEWS UPDATE 19.01.2010
Thank you to all the 170 people who supported our Dinner on 7th January at Baldwin's Omega.  The severe weather did not stop people attending.
Over £6500 was raised on the night for South Yorkshire & Hallamshire Clubs for Young People in a fantastic atmosphere.  Mr Blunkett was very supportive of the cause and greatly amused all present with his anecdotes. We wish to thank him and his wife Margaret for helping to make the evening such a success.  We are also most grateful to Mr Paul Hough for conducting such a great Auction.

Prior to Mr Blunkett's speech, Brendan Ingle MBE did a bit of  warmly received 'stand up' with a serious message.  He was accompanied by two young boxers from his St Thomas' Gym. Barry and Lee gave an enlightening presentation about how they had turned their life around under the wing of Brendan.

They were followed by Ross, from 'The Double Six Youth Club' at Woodseats who made an impressive speech about the 'perception of youth' (his first ever - and magnificently presented to an audience of 170).  Ross had been involved in the making of a DVD on this subject - copies of which were distributed.

Canal Side Clean Up
Abbeydale Sorts It

(A Grand Morning by the Sheffield Canal)

A bi-annual
Environmental Services Committee
Project
of The Rotary Club of Abbeydale

A group of Abbeydale Rotarians and a few long-supporting family members joined members of the Inland Waterways Association on Sunday 25th October for another litter (and larger unsightly items) clean up along the Sheffield Canal side at Tinsley.

Abbeydale Rotarians have been assisting bi-annually for a few years now. Such otherwise grotty tasks can be thoroughly enjoyable if one sets out in such good company and the Spring and Autumn Sunday morning jaunts starting from Tinsley Marina have been very satisfying both in terms of extra exercise and the improvements made to the area.   The group splits and one party clears up going back towards the City centre and the other party heads off in the direction of the Tinsley Flight lock - and beyond if possible.

Following the safety procedure briefing (as some items can potentially be hazardous), litter pick-up tools are distributed along with clear bin bags for the collection of cans, bottles and plastics. These are subsequently re-sorted for re-cycling purposes. Black bin bags are used for the non-recyclable materials.

The canal is beautifully kept by all the people whose work is connected with the waterways or by the volunteers. Unfortunately, there are some people who pass along the towpaths or over the road and foot bridges and who, for some reason, choose not to think of others, the dangers to wildlife or their City's general environment.
It's quite sad really - and yet the remedy is easy.  If everyone just took their little bit home or to a bin...

We were fortunate again to have a sunny, if windy, morning which made the task fun whilst appreciating the tranquil setting by the canal.

A good thirty to forty large bags of rubbish was collected.  Pie and peas, teas and coffees followed and very welcome it all was too.

Garden Task Force

Bents Green School's Garden Makeover

An Abbeydale Rotary Garden Task Force Team was out and about early on Saturday morning 3rd October at the former Talbot Special School site in Norton.  It is now the temporary home, for two years, of Bents Green Special School whilst their own school premises are being constructed.  The Club's Environmental Committee agreed to renovate the two garden quadrangles within the school, so twelve Rotarians arrived and tackled the job of renovating the first garden like a swarm of bees.  The garden had become very overgrown but underneath it was clear that there was the potential for a very pleasant environment to be enjoyed by staff and pupils alike, once again.

Abbeydale Rotary Club is no stranger to major garden overhauls, having completely built from scratch another large special needs garden on the adjacent site at the former Talbot School in 2000 when over 70 tonnes of spoil was removed by wheelbarrows alone.  This was followed by a major make-over of the quadrangle at Sheffield Cheshire Home, Mickley Lane.

A further session or two of renovation are planned for Bents Green's temporary site in order to get it into final shape and to add wood treatment where required.  Typically, the whole team had a great time doing it with lots of good humour and fun.  Well, that's Abbeydale for you. We don't do 'miserable' !

'Miles With Smiles'
'Miles with Smiles'
£2000 raised for
St. Luke's Hospice

(Abbeydale Inner Wheel tell the Rotarians to

'Get On Their Bikes!')

Members of Abbeydale Rotary Club assisted the President and members of the Inner Wheel Club of Abbeydale in their efforts to raise money for St Luke's Hospice in Sheffield, the charity chosen by this year's Inner Wheel President, Christine Marshall.

The Rotary members joined family and friends for the 'Miles with Smiles' day, in a 2 hour 'spinning class' on the exercise equipment at Esporta in Sheffield. Teams of families set a target to keep pedalling for two hours.  Some of the Inner Wheel members were invited to set themselves targets in swimming, walking, running, rowing and cycling.  President Christine started the event by completing 100 x 25 lengths of the pool and Janet Rodgers completed 50 x 25 meters.  A team of 16 Inner Wheelers kept bikes going for an hour. (Ages not given but shall we say that a few are quite long serving members of the club !). It was extremely successful and raised over £2000 for St. Luke's Hospice.

On September 29th, the Inner Wheel Club held its 50th Celebration of Charter with an attendance of 120 people including Rotary members, family and friends. A framed certificate was presented by Abbeydale Rotary President Alan Young to Abbeydale  Inner Wheel President Christine Marshall, marking the Club's first 50 years of Friendship, Exceptional Service to the Community and the Promotion of International Understanding.
