Slum Housing In The Peaks
I live with my fiancee in a council flat in the Hope Valley. Some, I am sure, will agree that many of these properties are in need of modernisation, ours is no different.
In our case we have a bathroom with no adequate ventilation (causing damp) and no shower facility increasing both our power bills and the councils own carbon foot print.
Our Kitchen is i'll provided for too. The units are of very poor quality, our only draw is ill fitting. Again, ventilation is a real issue here with no extractor fan so causing more potential for damp.
Our heating is an absolute joke, an old back boiler (highly inefficient) and a central heating system which, we have been unofficially told by contractors, is so out of date that repairs to it are not possible. We have a radiator in the kitchen which can not be repaired so has to remain permanently on.
The greatest joke of all is that the council is badgering us to have loft insulation, WHICH WE ALREADY HAVE 6" of it! God how much more do you need. All even more rediculous when you consider that to remove the chance of damp we must permanently leave windows open, on cold nights, to reduce condensation.
We really need a council that will help those who need it and will actually make a decision.
I was told that, "the council isn't sure about the improving budget for housing". To me this is total incompetence. How can any organisation NOT know how they are going to spend an alloted budget. It really is no wonder that idiotic investments were made by council chiefs re: Icelandic banks etc.
Oh and in case anyone is wagging a finger....I do have a job...I do pay my rent ....I do pay my council tax. AND as a past shopkeeper have helped to put tens of thousands into the government via VAT etc.
That isn't to say that I don't see the concerns for those on benefits. My partner now collects her pension.
As we do have an income we have even asked/suggested a partnership deal, where we will pay a contribution to the improvements or a pay back scheme for recompence on our improvements to the property which improve its market value...but been flatly refused.
I, like many, suffered losses in the last "recession" so now find that social housing is all I can afford. The attitude of High Peak Council (last time I was bothered to talk to them) that, "...you made you choice so your're stuck with it".
In fact we were actually told a year and a half ago that the councils is rolling out improvements. So, as a result, we thought we would accept this flat as our home and suffer a little until the improvements came. We have since been assured that there are NO such plans...
The council has not published a single policy document confirming the go ahead of any improvements in my or many other people areas around the High Peak.
What erks me most is that 12months of my rent would probably pay for the majority of works needed and would provide housing for the council to be proud of. Any decent private landlord would die of shame if they had properties the fell to the level of some of the councils 'Social Housing'.
SO... if you agree or disagree with my comments join the Hope Valley Forum at www.hopevalleyderbyshire.co.uk it's free! Do not sit back on this one, the council is relying on the fact that the public are not willing to join together to demand a change in policy....
...instead of a nice new interior for the Town hall!!!!! I think any moneies destined for that particular scheme should be earmarked from the Icelandic Bank account....

Argh! More Broadband problems
This is becoming a joke! I have again found BT have a Broadband that looks miniscule compared the dial up service they provide.
Please please please - if you are having the same problem in The Hope Valley, log on to the forum at www.hopevalleyderbyshire.co.uk
and let the people in power know that you are unhappy about it. The information you send in can then be used to strong arm BT into providing a
quality service for our area.

Pants Broad Band
I know it's an old chestnut but broadband in rural areas really is pants.
To think we are in a country that helped develop the IT industry and now we are falling way behind the rest of the developed AND emerging economies.
I have two relatives who are now seriously considering leaving this country as they no longer see a future here anymore. To them without the support of a solid IT infrastructure there is nowhere for them to develop their skills.
As you know I run the Hope Valley Forum and would love to gain more input from locals who feel they are being hard done to as far as broadband capacity is concerned. Join the forum - it's free and add free and let you voices be heard.

A Little Note - I hate Cap Locks!!!
Of Course there are many who love the Summer and to be honest I am one of them. However, now the first storms of Autumn are upon us I feel the need to communicate to the nation. Apart from which, the powers that be seem to have had a right old time of cocking things up financially. So I thought a little intervention from the High Peak was well in order. After all, with £2m out of each of our pockets I think we could all do with a little cheering up.
So please keep tuned in ...or what ever your supposed to do with bloggs and I'll add very soon.
