Lewes View A sideways look at Lewes life

It's not art
Further to my piece about Lewes going to the dogs - we now have to put up with the graffiti menace.

All over the town 'tags' are appearing. They are making this historic town look cheap and tawdry.

The authorities seem to be doing their best to keep the place clean but I for one would chip in a fiver for a reward to catch the 'artists' who doing this graffiti.

Just why do people do it?

Going to the dogs
Lewes is a mess - a dog's mess.

In recent weeks the footpaths in the town centre have been soiled by dirty dogs - with their idle owners too lazy to clear up.

Going through the precinct and High Street, you have to pick your way to ensure you do not pick up an unwanted present on the sole of your shoes.

And in recent weeks the town seems to have  much more litter blowing around.

Perhaps that's the onset on the tourism season and the inflxu of visitors.

Add to that some low level graffiti and we are left with the impression that Lewes is becoming scruffy.

Phoenix exhibition
I went to see the new exhibition at the town hall. what a disappointment.

There was so little information that really it was a waste of time going in to look.

It is impossible to make any sensible judgement from what was there. Quite why Charles Style has bothered with this show i don't know.

It doesn't sell his Phoenix Development in any shape or form. In fact, it is much more likely to put people's backs up. People in Lewes want more information about the scheme.

How will the traffic problems be dealt with? How sustainable is it? How will the flood defences impact on the rest of the town?

We need answers not strange models.

20mph limits
I'm sure I read more than 12 months ago that 20mph limits were on the way for much of Lewes town centre.

What's happened? I've seen no consultation, no meetings - just silence.

Has the county council gone cold on the idea? I hope not. Everything possible should be done to 'calm' the traffic in Lewes. A 20mph would be a good step forward.

I remembered the 20mph limit plan a couple of days ago when I saw a motor-cyclist blast up School Hill one evening.

He must have gone from 0 to 70mph in a very short distance. The noise was, of course, terrific. Any pedestrain in the way, crossing the road from near a parked car, would have been wiped out in an instant.

I accept that such a motor-cyclist would not slow down because of a 20mph limit. After all, he ignored the 30mph limit.

But we do need to get more of a culture into Lewes that walking, cycling and using the bus is the way to go about our business in the county town and that the car should very much be second fiddle.

Changing face
The face of Lewes is changing and looks set to change radically in the next few years.

Work goes on apace at the old printworks site off the High Street and more developments are planned.

There is a huge furore about the Phoenix site and it is hard to believe that - at the end of the planning process - that it will remain as it is.

That won't be a bad thing - it is run down, tatty.

But what should happen.

It seems as if a huge number of homes will be put on to the site.

Add to those the planned development of Wenban Smith and other sites in the town and the population of Lewes will grow enormously.

That means one thing: many more cars in the narrow, historic streets of Lewes.

The place is already jammed at certain times of the day. It will certainly grind to  a halt with all those extra cars.

What's the solution?

I've yet to see one suggested.  Each of these schemes seems to be considered in isolation.

Lewes needs a whole town solution to take into account housing, employment, shows and traffic management.

Where are the wardens?
Last week it was chaos in Lewes High Street - all through appalling parking.

Where were the wardens when you needed them?

Here was a situation where some robust enforcement could have worked wonders.

There were vehicles parked all over the place at different times of the day and week. Result? Chaos.

It lead to the atmoshpere being polluted, cars revving their engines, horns being sounded. It was altogether and upleasant site.

A zealous parking warden could have whizzed up and down the High Street and easily made his (or her) target for dishing out fines.

Parking wardens and like policeman - never there when you want one.

Diversion is dangerous
It may have looked like a good idea to divert northbound traffic on the A26 while the roadworks are carried out on Malling Hill.

But, in practice, it was a poor decision.

Church Lane is just not wide enough for two huge articulated lorries to pass - especially when the no parking cones are placed on the road and not on the pavement.

The other fact is that Church Lane is a road through the middle of a housing estate. What have the people who live in that area done to deserve the A26 diverted past their front doors.

Of course, what's done is done. It has probably kept the traffic flowing and prevented gridlock in Lewes. For the motorists, the diversion was probably a winner. For the people of Malling, it's been a real pain.

More on the precinct
I'm told Lewes District Council wants to take more control of what goes in the little precinct.

Well, as well as sorting out vehicular access, perhaps there could be some regulation of the Chuggers [charity muggers, as they are called]

These are the folk who ambush you as you are shopping and try and sign you up to a particular charity.

In summer, it seems there is a hardly a day goes past without the Chuggers in operation.

I know traditional flag days are regulated. Are the Chuggers?

My view is that I willhappily give to charity but I do like to see my dosh go to the charity. How much are the chuggers earning in trying to persuade me to sign up?
